Mtume, the band, had a number one R&B hit with "Juicy Fruit" for Epic in 1983 and a number two single in 1984 with "You, Me and He." They recorded for Epic until the late '80s.
Mtume produced and/or wrote for such artists as Stephanie Mills, Roberta Flack/Donny Hathaway, Phyllis Hyman, Gary Bartz, Sadane, Lou Rawls, Rena Scott, Eddie Henderson in the late '70s, Levert, Tyrone Brunson, Roy Ayers, Henderson and Tease.
Mtume scored the film “Native Son” in the late 80s and is popular producer for the likes of Mary J. Blige, Jodice and other hip hop singers and rappers.

The founder and master behind it was James Mtume, the son of a famous jazz saxophonist Jimmy Heath.
James himself had participated as conga player and percussionist on different jazz or jazzfunk recordings during the 70s like Lonnie Liston Smith in 73, Miles Davis in 72 and 74 and on his father Jimmy Heats album in 72.
The centre piece in everything Mtume had done was James Mtume that decided to end the project, not for musical reasons, but more because he was disappointed on the changes in the musical business.

James Mtume's band Mtume hit its commercial and creative peak in 1983, when Juicy Fruit was released.
Throughout Juicy Fruit, James Mtume takes a very hands-on approach -- in addition to producing the album and co-writing much of the material, he plays keyboards and provides some of the lead vocals (along with the expressive, big-voiced Tawatha Agee).
Juicy Fruit isn't the only worthwhile album that James Mtume's band came out with in the 1980s; as a rule, his 1980s output was solid.

Tawatha has worked consistently as a backing singer from the mid-70's through to the present day, predominantly with James Mtume who produced her one solo album 'Welcome To My Dream' for Epic Records in 1987.
She was also the featured vocalist on many of Mtume's hits including 'Juicy Fruit' (UK Top 40, 1983 and the number one R and B spot, in the States, for eight weeks in summer 1983.

Mtume, who played guitar and percussion, learnt his craft on the jazz circuit with Herbie Hancock, Sonny Rollins, Joe Henderson and then Freddie Hubbard who introduced him to Miles and got hired as percussionist.

In 87 she released her solo album "Welcome to my dream" that was produced by James Mtume and very much backed-up by former Mtume members and musicians.
To a certain degree the album can even be be seen as the seventh Mtume album due to the closeness to them on literally every level.
She has worked with great names like Frank Sinatra, James Brown and Quincy Jones to just mention a few.
