nobleARTIST: James Naughton   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-19)
James Naughton's work is not only a response to his experience of the sublime beauty of the British Landscape, but also a representation of a more personal relationship to it.
James grew up in a large industrial town and believes that his work communicates his romantic longing for a connection between the elemental forces in nature and the detachment of his urban existence.
James has developed a number of unconventional techniques, many of which are a result of his printmaking background.

Naughton: I told Joanne and Paul that I thought it'd be neat if we cast as much as we could from this area, then Westport would be "our town." Jayne Atkinson was here, Jane Curtin lived just up the road, Frank Converse was here.
Naughton: That was the arc of her whole performance -- growing simpler and simpler.
Naughton: I told Paul early on, "This could work on television." You know, a regular television show is 44 minutes of screen time and it takes eight days to shoot -- that's five-and-a-half minutes of screen time per day.

 James Naughton
Naughton is a musical theater veteran with the credentials to prove it — Tony Awards for City of Angels in 1990 and Chicago in 1997, critical plaudits for these and other performances.
It certainly seems to be working: Street of Dreams, Naughton’s evening of song, has been heralded by critics across the country as among the best examples of nightclub performance in years.
In an industry where excess is often a hallmark (think of Mandy Patinkin in his sweaty T-shirt, chewing and vibrating a song into a bloody pulp), Naughton’s signature is restraint.

 Theatre Reviews Limited: "Manhattan Music"
Naughton and his musical director John Oddo along with musicians Jay Azzolina (guitar), Warren Odze (drums), Steve Laspina (bass) and Tim Ries (saxophone) present ninety minutes of exceptional musical performance, working together as an ensemble and separately as exceptionally gifted solo artists.
Naughton began the evening with songs by Duke Ellington ("Lucky So And So") and Hoagy Carmichael ("Stardust Melody") followed by Hank Snow's "I've Been Everywhere." This first set assured the audience they needed to be prepared for an unconventional and well-thought-out evening of song by a gifted and endearing vocalist.
Naughton returned to the stage and sang "The Folks Who Live on the Hill" after sharing with the audience his decision more than 20 years ago to move to Connecticut from Los Angeles and start life anew with his wife Pam and their children Greg and Keira looking for work in Manhattan.
