James Ossuary - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The James ossuary was on display at the Royal Ontario Museum from November 15, 2002 to January 5, 2003.
When the ossuary arrived in Toronto in the morning of October 31, 2002, the ROM personnel on hand were horrified to see that the ossuary was packed in a cardboard box (whereas the standard for shipping antiquities is typically within a foam-lined metal or wooden crate).
As for the James Ossuary, epigraphers of IAA concluded that the inscription was modern.

 James' Ossuary Found
James was Head of the Christian church in Jerusalem, and it is no surprise that his ossuary would be preserved and well marked.
The Roman Catholic Church views James as a first cousin of Jesus (so are the other brothers and sisters), born of Clopas (assumed to be brother of Joseph) and Mary of Clopas.
James, and the other five children are mentioned as brothers and sisters in the Gospels.

israelinsider: Views: Final report on the James ossuary
As ossuaries contravene the normal rules for Jewish burial, the appearance of so many ossuaries in the period before the destruction of the temple is strong evidence that the cemeteries around Jerusalem were extremely short on normal burial space.
As the ossuaries were stacked or stored right next to each other, for long term storage and visiting, the size of an ossuary tends towards an average of around 24 inches in length by 13-3/4 inches in height by 12 inches in width.
The inscription on the "James" ossuary is anomalous.

James Ossuary Earliest Reference to Jesus : Laurence Gardner   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
With the James ossuary bringing the siblings of Jesus to the forefront of current discussion, some orthodox theologians have suggested that Aramaic was an unusual language in that it did not differentiate between brothers, sisters and cousins.
The James ossuary is a plain and very common limestone type of bone box, but as was pointed out some time ago its inscription is unusually refined - more in keeping with those found on lavishly styled ossuaries such as that of Joseph Caiaphas (Yehosef bar Qayafa), the High Priest of Jerusalem AD 18-37.
Stories such as that of the James ossuary are presented with a certain initial enthusiasm, but this is generally clouded by the inclusion of irrelevant comments from churchmen.

On June 18, 2003, the IAA announced in a press conference that the "James Ossuary inscription" is a forgery.
Ossuaries captured the attention of much of the Christian world when in 1990, an ossuary inscribed with, "Yehosef bar Qayafa" was unearthed accidentally by Israeli construction workers.
It was one of two ossuaries of the family of "Caiaphas," the same Caiaphas, the high priest, spoke of in the gospels.

James' final witness to the world was his willingness to defend the Christian faith and die as a martyr.
James, who witnessed the resurrected Jesus, was transformed from a sarcastic non-believing younger brother to a faithful witness that willingly died for his faith in Messiah.
The hypothesis that the James ossuary is a modern day forgery is based on the idea that someone would be able to carve such intricate letters that would match methods and types from the 1st century.

James was Jesus's blood brother, born of the Virgin Mary; 2.
The wording on the James ossuary, if it is to be interpreted as referring to a blood brother born of Mary, would indicate that of the many sects one particular was involved in its apparent forgery.
The James ossuary is suspicious not only for the lack of its provenance, a development frequently indicating a forgery, but also for the tidiness of its inscription, which seems to have been written not by an early "innocent" Christian but by a propagandist such as those who created so many bogus relics over the centuries.

Burial Box of St. James Found?
James, Joseph, and Jesus were very common names in first century Palestine, and Lemaire estimates that there may have been as many as twenty individuals in Jerusalem who were named James and who had fathers named Joseph and brothers names Jesus.
The ossuary identifies its James as the son of Joseph and the brother of Jesus, it does not identify him as the son-much less the biological son-of Mary.
Bottom line: If the ossuary of James bar-Joseph is that of James the brother of the Lord, it sheds light on which of the theories Catholics are permitted to hold is most likely the correct one, but it does nothing to refute Catholic doctrine.

 James' Ossuary - ChristianAnswers.Net
Golan is suspected of forging both the James ossuary and another archeological find, a stone tablet with an inscription from 2 Kings 12 calling for temple repairs.
The discovery of the inscription which seems to mention James, the brother of Jesus Christ, was originally announced at a news conference in Washington, D.C. on the morning of October 21, 2002.
The inscription is in Aramaic, one of the languages of the New Testament period, and says "James, son of Joseph, brother of Jesus." It's carved on the side of an ossuary, a box carved out of soft limestone, typically used as a bone container in the tombs of first century A.D. Jews.

Debate over ‘Jesus inscription’ rises again - Science - MSNBC.com
Israeli researchers said the main clue that the inscription was phony was that its letters had been cut through a soft gray residue that could not have built up naturally with age and thus was most likely a homemade paste smeared over the inscription to make it appear old.
James Harrell, a geologist at the University of Toledo and a member of the Association for the Study of Marble and Other Stones in Antiquity, wrote in the publication that the Israeli investigation was flawed.
The inscription, he said, could be ancient and the traces of residue found within its letters might have been left behind by something used to clean the inscription, or someone might have smeared the film over the lettering to hide the cleaning.

Royal Ontario Museum | About the ROM | News | Royal Ontario Museum Statement: Oded Golan’s arrest/ James Ossuary
We considered the James Ossuary an extraordinary opportunity to contribute to the scientific assessment of a new and controversial object by being the first museum to present it to the public, during an important gathering of biblical archaeology scholars, and by hosting a public debate among leading experts.
The James Ossuary was on display at the ROM from November 15, 2002 to January 5, 2003.
The studies that were carried out on the inscription and broken fragments of the Ossuary, however, satisfied the ROM’s investigative team that it was an authentic artifact with an authentic inscription that might make it the Ossuary of James, the brother of Jesus.

The James Ossuary - by Dr. Paul L. Maier
Researchers have uncovered a 2,000-year-old ossuary - a box that held bones - that bears the inscription "James, son of Joseph, brother of Jesus." This may be the first archaeological evidence that refers directly to Jesus and identifies James as His brother.
Against authenticity: Unfortunately, the ossuary was not discovered in situ, that is, it did not come to light in the course of an archaeological dig as was the case in the two previous.
And finally, the Israel Geological Survey submitted the ossuary to a variety of scientific tests, which determined that the limestone of the ossuary had a patina or sheen consistent with a many-centuries-long sojourn in a cave.
