(18o3I863), English general, and one of the heroes of the Indian Mutiny, was the son of Benjamin Outram of Butterley Hall, Derbyshire, civil engineer, and was born on the 29th of January 1803.
On arriving at Cawnpore with reinforcements, Outram, in admiration of the brilliant deeds of General Havelock, conceded to him the glory of relieving Lucknow, and, waiving his rank, tendered his services to him as a volunteer.
In the second capture of Lucknow, on the commander-in-chiefs return, Outram was entrusted with the attack on the side of the Gumti, and afterwards, having recrossed the river, he advanced through the Chattar Manzil to take the residency, thus, in the words of Sir Cohn Campbell, putting the finishing stroke on the enemy.

JAMES PAGAN, of whom the foregoing illustration is an excellent presentment, was for nearly thirty years a prominent figure on the "Glasgow Herald." He was for nearly sixteen years reporter and sub-editor, and for the last fourteen years of his life editor and managing proprietor.
Outram's reputation, however, rests upon his humorous poems, embodied in the "Legal Lyrics," a little volume which is likely to live as long as Scottish wit and humour are understood and appreciated.

 Peaks of the Canadian Rockies
In his drive to make the first ascents of high mountains, James Outram was probably the most ambitious of the early climbers to visit the Canadian Rockies.
Outram's focus on first ascents was made clear when he wrote that the mountaineer's soul, "will crave- and rightly so- the chief joy of the climber's ambition, a 'first ascent'." This unabashed competitive urge brought him into conflict with some of the other early mountaineers.
Outram spent his remaining years in Canada, having found, "in the lonely woods or on the solitary mountain tops of Canada, the long-sought sanctuary of the storm-tossed soul.

The Assiniboine, also known as the Assnipwan or sometimes the Stone Sioux, are originally from the Northern Great Plains area of North America (Montana, Saskatchewan, Alberta and southwestern Manitoba around the US/Canadian border).
