 | | Henderson, James Pinckney (31 Mar. 1808-4 June 1858), governor and U.S. senator from Texas, was born in Lincolnton, Lincoln County, North Carolina, the son of Lawson Henderson, a lawyer, and Elizabeth Carruth. |
 | | Henderson quickly emerged to prominence, marked in his militia service by his promotion to major in 1830 and his ultimate rise to the rank of colonel. |
 | | Henderson remained in that position until June 1837, when Houston sent him to Europe as a special envoy to seek the recognition of Texas independence from France and Great Britain and to secure commercial treaties with the European powers. |
