Pryde's later version of how the name was discovered varies slightly from Nicholson's (Pryde believed that it was he alone who had discovered the name and suggested its use), but his account is substantially the same.
Initially Pryde and Nicholson signed themselves 'J and W. Beggarstaff', and in due course this led a number of their admirers to refer to them as 'the Beggarstaff brothers'.

About The Beggarstaff Posters | Abbeville Press
In later years, when attention switched from the posters of Pryde and Nicholson to the two artists' paintings, writers who knew one or other of them, such as James Laver and Marguerite Steen, missed opportunities to record details of this remarkable partnership.
The principal aims of the present volume are, firstly, to catalogue and illustrate the Beggarstaff oeuvre, and secondly, to discuss--as far as the available material allows--the various technical and formal aspects, such as materials, techniques, creative procedures, formal characteristics and stylistic development.
Although the posters that Pryde and Nicholson produced on their own account after the dissolution of the Beggarstaff partnership are outside the scope of this study, I have briefly referred to these works in the concluding section of the introductory text.

The "Beggarstaffs" (James Pryde [1866-1941] and William Nicholson [1872-1949]) -- their name was chosen apparently at random and happened to be the name of a local grain company -- were actually brothers-in-law.
Nicholson was perhaps the more noted craftsman of the two, while Pryde was most often the originator of the idea behind the poster.
Both were highly regarded by their peers, but they eventually fell out of favor with advertisers, who came to prefer a different style to their rather simplified approach in design.
