  William Ralston
Ralston travelled to the United States frequently on bank business and, by 1850, was also serving as an agent for various ocean steamship lines.
During his years in Panama, Ralston rose in importance in Garrison and Fretz's various business dealings and even captained a ship on an 1851 round trip voyage from Panama to San Francisco during one of the many emergencies that he was forced to deal with on an ongoing basis.
Ralston became personally involved in protecting the firm's interests in Nicaragua during the most turbulent period of the Walker Affair, but had no interest in remaining involved in Garrison's adventures in Central America.

James Harvey Ralston, lawyer, Illinois and California state legislator, and quartermaster at the Alamo from 1846 to 1848, was born on October 12, 1807, in Bourbon County, Kentucky, the son of John and Elizabeth (Neely) Ralston.
Ralston was instrumental in organizing the Alamo Masonic Lodge on December 1, 1847.
Ralston did not run for reelection in 1854, but in 1856 he was a candidate on the Democratic ticket for chief justice of the state supreme court.

James Harvey Ralston, the subject of this sketch, was born in Bourbon county, Kentucky, on the 12th of October, 1807.
Ralston was elected a justice of the peace in and for the county of Adams, and served in that capacity for three or four years, or until he became well established as a lawyer in the higher courts.
Ralston, a native of Plymouth, Ohio, and a "Napoleon of Finance," it may be remembered, was for three years president of the great Bank of California at San Francisco, until deposed from that position by the directors, and the bank closed its doors about noon on the 26th of August, 18785.

Ralston explained that he had not reported his workers compensation claim against his former employer, a union contractor, that he was a “salt” and was there to organize S.B.S. At the hearing, Ralston identified the contractor as Howard Concrete Pumping.
Ralston recalls that about 10 minutes later Mills called him to the office where he presented him a termination notice stating that he was being terminated for “falsification of employment application.” Ralston signed the document and received his final check.
Ralston then asked Mills if he was “sure you want to do this,” noting that his supervisors had been happy with his work and that it was illegal to fire him “for being Union.” Mills replied that he would “worry about that bridge when he got to it.” Mills did not deny the foregoing conversation.

When his demand that the cabinet invoke military conscription was rejected, Ralston resigned in Nov., 1944; the policy was shortly put in force by his successor, A. McNaughton.
