The Foundation's stated goals are to educate the public and the media on the consequences of accepting paranormal and supernatural claims, and to support research into paranormal claims and attempts to test them in controlled scientific experimental conditions.
Randi points out that the official Challenge rules stipulate that the participant has to be satisfied with the conditions and criteria of their test; if they claim to do something that cannot be tested, then clearly no test could ever be performed.
Randi has rejected at least one applicant, Rico Kolodzey, with the rejection letter stating this was because the applicant was "a liar and a fraud." The applicant in question claimed to survive without food via Breatharianism.

Randi has worked as a professional stage magician and trickster since the 1950s (he appeared as "The Amazing Randi" on a short-lived TV show entitled Wonderama in 1955), but he entered the national spotlight in the 1960s when he challenged the public claims of Uri Geller.

The Relentless Hypocrisy Of James Randi
It is Randi's assertion that Browne refuses to submit to a fair testing by his organization.
Many Randi critics have labeled the Challenge "biased" and "unscientific." Randi often refers to paranormal proponents as "frauds," and/or "self-deluded fools," and inspite of Randi's stated basis, it is JREF which ultimately must approve all testing protocols.
Repeatedly, Randi has shown himself to be not only contradictory and hypocritical but eminently illogical in his defense of the Challenge's application process.

Some of Randi's detractors claim that the challenge is insincere, and that Randi will ensure he never has to pay out.
Randi claims that the phrase "I always have an out" refers to the fact that he does not allow test subjects to cheat, although others have interpreted it as meaning that Randi regards the chances of him having to pay out as non-existent due to his a priori assumption that paranormal phenomena does not exist.
The JREF replies that this is because they have determined that none of the applicants have ever demonstrated any paranormal abilities during preliminary testing; hundreds of preliminary tests have been carried out.
