James Sayers - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
James Sayers (or Sayer) (1748 - April 20, 1823) was an English caricaturist.
Sayer was always at his best when attacking Fox, whose strong features he portrayed with remarkable power, always so as to make them convey expressions of defiant impudence or anger.
In his large plates he is inferior to James Gillray, and he never has the grace of Thomas Rowlandson, but he was closer to the truth than either.

Sayers was born in Oxford, where her father the Rev. Henry Sayers, M.A., was chaplain (and headmaster of the Choir School) of Christ Church College, Oxford.
Despite Lady Sayer's establishment background, she was a fearless and empassioned fighter in the defence of Dartmoor: frequently she deliberately interrupted army live-firing exercises on Dartmoor's military ranges, and in 1985 snubbed The Prince of Wales over the Duchy of Cornwall's management plan for Dartmoor, since this allowed for a continuance of military usage.
Sayers is most famous for her autobiography, ''Peig'', ISBN 0815602588, which she dictated to her son Micheál.

 NYPL, James Gillray
James Gillray, shown here in a mezzotint after his only known formal self-portrait (a miniature on ivory, in the National Portrait Gallery, London), was born into a Moravian household in the village of Chelsea in 1756.
His first satires, dating from the late 1770s, show the influence of John Hamilton Mortimer, but it was James Sayers’s portrait caricatures that inspired Gillray to find his unique voice, and encouraged him to develop his brilliant and often corrosive repertoire of immediately recognizable characters.
Charles James Fox, eloquent parliamentarian and influential Whig, assured the House of Commons on April 30, 1787, that he knew on “immediate authority” that the Prince of Wales’s marriage to Mrs.

With no ability to have offspring, the human race would be doomed, and that would certainly lead to a pervasive attitude that hedonism is all that's left.
Also, and I don't know if James explores this in her novel, a significant number of evangelical Christians would see universal infertility as a GOOD sign - that it would mean that all that needed to be born, HAVE been born, and that the Rapture is just around the corner.

Sayers and Christie characters exist only on the level of convention (like Sayers' clergymen or rustics) or caricature, but even minor P.D. James characters are fully realized, given a pedigree, a school background and an attitude toward life.
It is the interplay of character that most concerns P.D. James, the lasting effect of a casual piece of cruelty, the deliberate rasping quality of a police interrogation, the moments of cowardice and betrayal that may mark an otherwise blameless life.
Like other modern crime writers, Ruth Rendell included, Miss James is intent on extending the boundaries of the crime story, and her most recent book, ''Innocent Blood,'' was a serious but at times overstrained and overambitious crime melodrama that offered no mystery.

Typical of James, there is little bloodshed-her victims more frequently succumb to poison or smothering, leaving suicide as well as homicide a possible cause of death.

The ABC tearjerker's appeal sprang from a combination of compelling themes: male bonding (long before the men's movement), racial harmony (the ebullient Piccolo and the reticent Sayers were the Bears' first interracial roommates), and dying young (Piccolo had succumbed in 1970 at age 26).
Combined with those juicy elements was the exceptional chemistry between two little-known actors, Billy Dee Williams (Sayers) and James Caan (Piccolo).
