James Scarlett, 1st Baron Abinger (December 13, 1769 – April 17, 1844) was an English judge.
His second son, General Sir James Yorke Scarlett (1799–1871), leader of the heavy cavalry charge at Balaklava, is dealt with in a separate article; and his elder daughter, Mary, married John Campbell, 1st Baron Campbell of St Andrews, and was herself created Baroness Stratheden (Lady Stratheden and Campbell) (d.
1831), Lord Abinger's younger brother, was chief justice of Jamaica.

While attending the Norfolk circuit on the 2nd of April he was suddenly seized with apoplexy, and died in his lodgings at Bury on the 7th of April 1844.

In the Crimean War the 5th Dragoon Guards formed part of the Heavy Cavalry Brigade (of which Scarlett was appointed brigadier); it was sent to the Black Sea in 1854, and suffered very heavily from cholera in the camps of Varna.
For his services On this day Scarlett was promoted major-general, and in 1855 was made K.C.B. After a short absence in England he returned to the Crimea with the local rank of lieutenant-general to command the British cavalry.
After the Peace of Paris Sir James Scarlett commanded the cavalry at Aldershot until 1860, and was adjutant-general of the army from 1860 to 1865.

According to one source of information, Captain Francis Scarlett was the first member of his family to come to Jamaica, where he was believed to have been present at the taking of the Island in 1655; after which he was given large grants of land in the Parish of Saint Andrew for his services.
James left Jamaica at an early age to be educated in England.
The Scarletts and the Barretts had been friends for many years in Jamaica, and it seems natural that James Scarlett would have been selected to keep an eye on young Moulton, while the boy was at school in England.
