He also discovered the periodic comets P/2000 Y3 Scotti and P/2001 X2 Scotti, which are not yet numbered as they have only been seen at one perihelion.
Scotti's research interests include the origin of comets, the dynamical evolution of comets and asteroids, the Near-Earth Asteroids, and the outer solar system.

 News Briefs, part 2
James V. Scotti, a University of Arizona astronomer, discovered the asteroid early Friday, about 14 hours before it passed within 65,000 miles of the planet - the astronomical equivalent of a near collision of two cars in an intersection.
Scotti used the Spacewatch telescope at Kitt Peak, Ariz., to view what is the closest encounter between Earth and an asteroid that astronomers have observed as it happened - in real time.
Scotti said the asteroid that came close Friday was about six to 13 meters in diameter, or about the size of a large minivan or small school bus.

Spacewatch researcher James V. Scotti of the University of Arizona in Tucson arranged for the telescope to examine a region of sky near Jupiter for several nights last October.
Yet he and his colleagues didn't notice that one of the newly observed objects, which appeared to be in the main asteroid belt between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter, was moving too slowly to be an asteroid.
Scotti followed the standard procedure of forwarding the data to the International Astronomical Union's (IAU) Minor Planet Center at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory in Cambridge, Mass.

The existence of this object was soon confirmed by James V. Scotti of the Spacewatch program at the University of Arizona.
Scotti reported at least five condensations in a long, narrow train about 47 arc seconds in length and about 11 arc seconds in width.
For example, the 11 brightest fragments as measured with the HST-- visual (V) magnitude 23.7-24.8 or about 15 million times too faint to be seen by the naked eye--had the brightness one would expect from spheres 4.3 down to 2.5 kilometers (1.6 miles) in diameter, assuming a normal cometary reflectivity for the fragments (about 4%).

Fast-spinning asteroid   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
Whirling at that speed and given its size, 1998 KY26 has to be a strong, single chunk of rock that was sent reeling from its parent asteroid in some space collision, said James V. Scotti, a senior research specialist at the UA Lunar and Planetary Laboratory (LPL) and a co-author of the Science paper.
LPL Professor Tom Gehrels, Spacewatch co-founder, discovered asteroid 1998 KY26 on May 28, 1998, using the 0.9 meter (36-inch) Spacewatch telescope at Kitt Peak, Ariz. Six nights later Scotti, joined at the Spacewatch telescope by Dan Durda, took 111 images of the asteroid, measuring its minimum to maximum changes in brightness.
Current theory says that "these rubble piles are conglomerates of debris broken apart by multiple collisions and held together by their mutual gravity, spinning slowly enough so that they don't fall apart," he added.

 Robert Christgau: CG: Artist 1793
(Who's on congas, James?) The fourth is the "King Heroin" sermon, which together with its ten-minute offshoot "Public Enemy #1" is stuck cunningly--Brown has been reading his Alexander Pope--in the middle of the dance stuff on both sides.
In which JB eases the tempo and stops using his voice as a conga drum, thus fashioning a languorous funk that I guess is designed to compete with Barry White.
Fact is, he hasn't known what to do with his reality, originality, genius, and so forth since the mid-'70s, when disco took the bump out of the JB funk that made modern dance music possible.

Using measurements of the length of the train of fragments and a model for the tidal disruption, J.V. Scotti and H.J. Melosh have estimated that the parent nucleus of the comet (before breakup) was only about 2 km across [13].
This would imply that the individual fragments are no larger than about 500 meters across.

Some scientists fear the public may become desensitised to the warnings.

Dr Scotti did not know about the celestial rock's possible trajectory until Monday, when Italian researcher Andrea Milani posted an internet message warning of a 1 in a million chance of a collision and asking other astronomers to track it carefully.
