The park encompasses the old homesite and family cemetery of the historic Arkansas Conway family including the first governor of Arkansas James Sevier Conway.

Conway owes its establishment to Colonel A.P. Robinson who, during the completion of the Little Rock/ Fort Smith railroad, accepted 640 acres of land in what is now downtown Conway instead of his usual salary.
Conway County was formed on October 20, 1825, from territory taken from Pulaski County and was named for Henry Wharton Conway, a member of the Arkansas territorial delegation to Congress.

James L. Kemper was born in Madison County, Virginia on June 11, 1823, and in 1853 was elected to the House of Delegates where he served as Speaker of the House, 1861-63.
He stated the town consisted of Colonel Spotswood's "enchanted castle on one side of the street and a baker's dozen of ruinous tenements on the other, where the Germans had lived." His description of the interior of the "enchanted castle" says that he was escorted into a room elegantly set off with pier glass.

My grandmother had an "Uncle Jimmy" Sevier who lived in Washington, Co. He had a magnificent farm and the most beautiful home in the lovely mountains fo East Tenn. He had a large family and it may be that he is the ancestor you are looking for.
I hope so for he was a grand man. There are some very fine minds in the present generation of Sevier's and I am proud of them as well as our ancestors.
