Around 1870 James Shepherd Pike (1811-1882), a lumberman, author, editor, and journalist for the New York Herald Tribune, placed 12 granite milestones from his summer home in Robbinston to his family home and office in Calais, along what was then known as the Robbinston Road.
The 0 mile point, at the corner of Route 1 and North Mill Street in Calais was the location of the Pike family home in Calais, in which James Shepherd had grown up and continued to live for most of his life.
The original home being made of wood was moved by Pike's brother Frederick A. Pike and a friend Freeman H. Todd and in it's place they built, with $10,000 of their own money, the current stone building housing the Calais Free Library and Reading Room.

Pike's association with the Tribune and the men who ran it, especially Greeley and Charles A. Dana, became increasingly intimate after 1850.
Pike's articles, interpretative and individualistic, were much like the columns of our twentieth-century political analysts, and his Washington despatches invariably carried his "J. P." at the bottom.
Greeley and Pike were probably friends by the late 1840's when both were much in Washington.

James S. Pike, the Maine journalist, wrote an account of misrule in South Carolina, appropriately called The Prostrate State, and painted a lurid picture of the conduct of Negro legislators and the general lack of decorum in the management of public affairs.
By picking and choosing from his notes those events and incidents that supported his argument, he sought to place responsibility for the failure of Reconstruction on the Grant administration and on the freedmen, whom he despised with equal passion.
James Ford Rhodes, whose general history of the United States was widely read by contemporaries, was as pointed as any of Dunning's students in his strictures on Reconstruction: "The scheme of Reconstruction," he said, "pandered to ignorant negroes, the knavish white natives, and the vulturous adventurers who flocked from the North.

The Lincoln Plawg - the blog with footnotes
An earlier - if not the original - source for legislative mayhem in South Carolina under Reconstruction is JS Pike (James Shepherd Pike), who, it seems, who wrote for Horace Greeley's New York Tribune on the subject [3].
Pike's pieces, written in early 1873, were collected in a book published in 1874 entitled The Prostrate State.
For all his high dudgeon on Southern antics, Pike, it seems, was not averse to dipping his snout in the trough of patronage: according to a promising-looking piece on Lincoln and the New York press, Pike was made US Minister to The Hague by Lincoln [5].
