James Short - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
James Short (June 10, 1710 – June 15, 1768) was an British mathematician, optician and telescope maker.
Born at Edinburgh in 1710 and originally educated for the church, Short attracted the attention of Maclaurin, professor of mathematics at the university, who around 1732 gave him permission to use his rooms in the college buildings for experiments in the construction of telescopes.
In Short's first telescopes the specula were made of glass, as suggested by James Gregory, but later he used metallic specula only, and thus succeeded in giving them true parabolic and elliptic shapes.

Jesus and James: A Short Reconciliation of the Sermon on the Mount and the Epistle of James
Not only does James not contradict the rest of scripture, but The Epistle of James is actually the closest biblical document in content to the sermon on the mount.
James is certainly not as straight-forward in his language as Jesus concerning the interior life, yet there is a great deal waiting there beneath the surface, if one is only willing to abandon their eisegetical tendencies.

As the publication where the majority of Thurber's short works were first printed when he was a writer on staff, the New Yorker is a good source of articles by and about the subject.
