		Based on the autobiographical novel by Kaylie Jones (daughter of the late novelist James Jones, who wrote "From Here to Eternity" and "Some Came Running"), the events of the movie are filament-thin and insubstantial but, like fine silk threads, they weave together a fabric of surpassing warmth and texture.
		In a sense, this is a story of perseverance, but perseverance only in the face of the numerous, quotidian calamities of any young girl's life – petty sibling rivalries, playing "doctor" with the boy next door, the first menstrual period, adolescent crushes and loss of virginity.
		Luisa Conlon is understated and believable as the young Channe, and newcomer Sobieski (breaking away from the cipher she played in "Deep Impact") is superb as the adolescent heroine.

		At the moment, she is understudying the leading role in a play, while secretly sleeping with Philippe, Jalil Lespert, who is married to the lead actress.
		It's a difficult, challenging theme to bring off but, thanks to the excellent performances of Sobieski, who speaks good French and does a passable Aussie accent, and Hong, who speaks bad French but whose face is amazingly expressive, it works wonderfully well.
		Neither her character of Sarah or James Hong’s M. Zao is defined for us and so they’re not terribly interesting, and the relationship between them is so intangible that it also is not something that engages us.
