Somerville's first action in WW2 was participating in the evacuation at Dunkirk, under the command of Admiral Bertram Ramsay.
He was actually retired as of 1939 (due to doctors' suspicion that he was suffering from tuberculosis), but he was nevertheless recalled into service as war broke out.
After the war, Somerville retired to Wells, Somerset, where he was made the Lord Lieutenant of Somerset.
