Stephens returned to Ireland as Head Centre of the IRB in 1856 in which capacity he organised Fenian cells throughout Ireland and was responsible for affiliating the Phoenix Association within the Fenian movement.
In 1858 Stephens travelled to America to raise funds for the IRB and when he returned to Ireland in 1859 his identity became known to the authorities and he was forced to return to America.

Stephens organized the Irish Republican Brotherhood (Fenian Society) in circles of ten, which divided when more than ten members had been initiated.
Each circle of ten had a circle master, or "center," who was the only leader the ordinary member came in contact with unless the circle was mobilized for political action.
As Stephens conceived it, the organization was proof against the plague of ordinary informers, but in practice it proved amazingly vulnerable, particularly in the abortive Fenian uprising of 1867.

I choose to research James Stephens based solely on my interest in his poem "The Main-Deep." I thought it was provoking and open to interpretation, which is one of the reasons I like poetry so much.
After looking him up, however, I was pleasently surprised to find that he was an Irish poet that was born in Dublin in 1882, the same year as James Joyce.
