James Stewart, 1st Duke of Richmond, 4th Duke of Lennox (1612-1655) was a Scottish nobleman.
He was made Duke of Richmond in 1623, when Cobham Hall and the manor of Cobham, Kent, was granted to him by King James I of England, and became the main residence of the family.
In 1641 the nephew of Ludovic Stewart, James, 4th Duke of Lennox, was created Duke of Richmond once again uniting the Scottish and English dukedoms.

She was married to Sir John Stewart of Darnley (distinguished in the military history of France as seigneur dAubigny), whose immediate ancestor was brother of James, 5th high steward of Scotland.
Their grandson, another Sir John Stewart, created a lord of parliament as Lord Darnley, was served heir to his great-grandfather Duncan, earl of Lennox, in 1473, and was designated as earl of Lennox in a charter under the great seal in the same year.
The old earl of Lennox, now grandfather of his sovereign, obtained the regency in 1570, but in the next year was killedin the attack made on the parliament at Stirling, being the third earl in succession to meet with a violent death.

Charles, 3rd duke of Richmond (1733-1806), was one of the most remarkable men of the i8th century, being chiefly famous for his advanced views on the question of parliamentary reform.
The 4th duke (1764-1819) and his wife Charlotte, daughter of the 4th duke of Gordon, were the givers of the famous ball at Brussels on the night before the battle of Quatre Bras, immortalized in Byron's Childe Harold.
Their son, the 5th duke (1791-1860), while still known by the courtesy title of earl of March, served on Wellington's staff in the Peninsula, being at the same time member of parliament for Chichester.

A strange contrast to Duke Alexander was his third brother, that Lord George Gordon who, beginning life in the Navy, and afterwards entering Parliament, acquired notoriety as an agitator and leader of the No-Popery Riots of 1780, afterwards becoming a Jew, and dying at last in Newgate Gaol.
The 4th Earl known as "Cock of the North" had aspirations to marry one of his sons to Mary, Queen of Scots and through a series of misunderstandings there was a rebellion which brought about the collapse of Gordon power after defeat at Corrichie in 1562.
The 4th Earl of Huntly (known as 'Cock of the North') rebuilt much of his grandfathers home but in the 17th century it was changed again by the 1st Marquess of Huntly.
