James Taylor was one of the most successful of the early 70s singer-songwriters, using mostly acoustic production (soft rock with folk overtones) and singing direct, personal love songs.
Taylor never tried to be an innovator like Mitchell, a virtuoso like Steve Stills, or a stylistic chameleon like Paul Simon, but he was damn good at what he did do.
Taylor had split with Mitchell and promptly married Carly Simon, and her appearance here is the first of many on the records that followed.

James Taylor's musical reliance upon nuance and subtle feeling would make it seem that he is a bad fit for generally impersonal large venues, but his ability to project those qualities to sizable audiences has always served his material well.
Taylor remains capable, at 57, of enveloping lyrics with vocal tenderness, a quality he emanated freely whether he was putting a refined spin on "Handy Man" atop the sturdy harmonies of his vocal backups, or strolling through the delicately powerful environs of "Fire and Rain" as a closer to the first of his two sets.
Taylor sat again with his acoustic, explaining why he was about to take a break and holding up the small chalkboard on which the set list was written as if to prepare himself for what was in store.

James Taylor's live set leaned harder on the RandB portion of his roots.
The crowd got most of the songs it needed (though "You've Got a Friend" was conspicuously absent), and Taylor subtly revised the detail of his familiar songs, changing small parts of the melodies and altering the phrasing occasionally to freshen the old warhorses without destroying their original character.
Of course, Taylor knitted it all together with his off-the-cuff remarks, delivered with the same kind of stutter and pacing that earned the button-down mind of Bob Newhart a Grammy or two.

That may not be intentional: "Fire and Rain" was about the suicide of a fellow inmate of Taylor's at a mental institution, not the national malaise.
But Taylor's sense of wounded hopelessness -- "I'm all in pieces, you can have your own choice," he sings in "Country Road" -- struck a chord with music fans, especially because of its attractive mixture of folk, country, gospel, and blues elements, all of them carefully understated and distanced.
