  J. Thomas Heflin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
James Thomas Heflin, (April 9, 1869–April 22, 1951), nicknamed "Cotton Tom," was a colorful United States Senator from Alabama.
Because of this apostasy, Heflin was denied renomination as a Democrat in 1930.
His nephew, Howell Heflin, would also become a Senator from Alabama and was Chief Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court; and known by all for his reasoned fairness to persons of all races (Chairman of Senate Ethics committee in late 1990's with no issue of racism ever during his long career).

Although born in Poulan, Georgia, Heflin was the nephew of prominent Alabama politician James Thomas Heflin, and grew up in Heflin, Alabama.
In 1978, Heflin was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate to succeed John Sparkman.
During his tenure, Heflin was considered as a bi-partisan candidate for a vacancy on the United States Supreme Court by President Ronald Reagan.

Of Lafayette, Chambers County, was born April 9, 1869, at Louina, Randolph County, and is the son of Dr. Wilson Lumpkin Heflin, a native of Fayetteville, Fayette County, Ga., and his wife Lavicie Catherine, daughter of Harrington and Sophia Phillips, of Louina.
His grandfather, Wyatt Heflin, a native of Orange County, N. C., was one of the early settlers in Randolph County, which county he represented in the legislature, 1841, 1843 and 1845.
Heflin was elected to the office of Secretary of State in November 1902, the first general election held under the new constitution.
