 About Sherborne House
James Thornhill was a Dorset man, born as he was in the borough of Weymouth and Melcombe Regis in 1675.
Highmore was no great artist but at least he taught Thornhill the rudiments of his trade and having acquired the lucrative post of Serjeant-Painter to the King in 1703, did contrive to pass it on to his former apprentice on his death in 1720.
Thornhill probably then worked under the Italian painter Antonio Verrio at Hampton Court but little is known of his activities up to 1704 save that he painted whatever he was asked to do, be it stage scenery, coach panels, religious works and whatever else came his way.

 Sir James Thornhill
By 1725 Sir James had made enough money to buy back his families ancestral estate just to the south of Stalbridge and here built Thornhill House which he probably designed himself in the Palladian manner.
In the grounds is a tall obelisk that Thornhill erected in 1727 to honor the accession of George II - from whom he no doubt expected royal patronage.
Sir James Thornhill also ran a private art academy where one of his was William Hogarth, who went on to be a far more famous painter than his master, and in 1727 married Sir James' daughter.

 Chapter 1:THORNHILL INTRODUCTION
Thornhill was first recorded as a family name in Derbyshire in 1278 and Yorkshire in 1370.
There is circumstantial evidence that the family described has a common ancestry with Sir James Thornhill (1675-1734), who painted the Painted Hall at Greenwich Hospital, the interior of the dome of St Paul's Cathedral and the ceiling of the Great Hall in Blenheim Palace.
Thornhill was also to have painted the Saloon and the Long Library, but the Duchess suspected him of sharp practice in charging (for the hall) twenty-five shillings (£1.25) a yard for the murals in grisaille; 'not', she considered, 'worth half-a-crown [12.5p] a yard' - as well as for the 'historical part' (ceiling) in colour.

Raphael's seven large gouache paintings, called cartoons, that weavers used in creating tapestries for the Sistine Chapel nearly 500 years ago exerted enormous influence on the development of painting in England in the 18th century.
This volume focuses on copies of the cartoons painted between 1729 and 1731 by Sir James Thornhill, England's foremost history painter.
Thornhill's painted copies, together with a variety of engraved versions, were pivotal in the development of the "British School." As an extension of Thornhill's early efforts to formalize the training of British artists, these copies played an important part in the prelude to the founding of the Royal Academy in 1786.
