Martin Van Buren was born on December 5, 1782, in Kinderhook, New York, the son of a Dutch farmer and tavern keeper, a relatively prosperous middle-class family.
Van Buren was a zealous adherent of Jefferson, and supported Morgan Lewis for governor of New York in 1803 against Aaron Burr.
In 1812 Van Buren was elected to the senate of New York from the middle district as a Clinton Republican, defeating Edward P. Livingston, the candidate of the " Quids," by a majority of 200.

Martin Van Buren was born in Kinderhook in 1782, soon after a fragile union of states successfully ended its fight for independence.
Van Buren artfully positioned himself in the eye of the storm, persistently advocating the principles of the Jeffersonian Republicans, namely states' rights, strict constitutional construction, and civil liberties.
Van Buren described one "improvement" to a friend in 1846 in this way: "When you visit me again you shall wash off the impurities of Mammon in the Bath which has been put up." Lindenwald was a source of great satisfaction to its owner.

 James Van Alen
His greatest legacies are as the inventor of the first tie breaker in tennis and as founder and primary benefactor of the International Tennis Hall of Fame and Museum at the Newport Casino, which he gave to the United States Tennis Association in 1954, saving the national landmark from a proposed car park.
He would become director of that tournament, a leader in the preservation of the aging wooden Casino (the cradle of U.S. tennis), and, at the instigation of his wife, Candy, the guiding light in founding the Hall of Fame to which he was elected in 1965.
Thereafter the USTA embraced the current ITF-approved "lingering death," as Van Alen disparagingly called the best-of-12 point version that requires a 2-point margin for victory, thus can extend into double figures.

For two years before the Open Era, in 1955 and 1956, the United States Pro Championship in Cleveland, Ohio was played by the Van Alen Streamlined Scoring System (VASSS) rules, created by James Van Alen, who later invented the tie-breaker.
The scoring was the same as that in table tennis, with sets played to 21 points and players alternating 5 services, with no second service.
Pancho Gonzales hit the fastest, 112.88 mph, followed by Jack Kramer at 107.8 and Welby Van Horn at 104.
