Obituary: James W. Christy / Former Delmont tax collector   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
James W. "Bill" Christy, who was taken prisoner during the Battle of the Bulge in World War II and lost both of his legs from frostbite, died Saturday in Greensburg from complications of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Christy was captured by the Germans in January 1945, he credited them with his survival, because they performed emergency surgery on him after he'd been hit with shrapnel, said the Rev. Frederick Heitzenroder, his pastor and friend.
Christy is survived by his son, John, of Delmont; another daughter, Jill, of North Huntingdon; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

 Charon
It was discovered by astronomer James Christy on June 22, 1978 by carefully examining highly magnified images of Pluto on photographic plates taken a couple of months before and noticing that a slight bulge appeared periodically.
It is not to be confused with the similarly named 2060 Chiron, another object in the outer solar system with an orbit between those of Saturn and Uranus.
In Greek mythology, Charon was the ferryman of the dead, a figure with close ties to the god Pluto.

 Charon Anniversary Press Release
Astronomer James W. Christy had noticed that a number of the images of Pluto appeared elongated, but images of background stars on the same plate did not.
On 7 July 1978, the discovery was formally announced to the astronomical community and the world by the IAU Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams via IAU Circular 3241.
Pluto was discovered at Lowell Observatory in 1930 by the late Clyde W. Tombaugh, an amateur astronomer from Kansas who was hired by the Observatory specifically to photograph the sky with a special camera and search for the planet predicted by the Observatory's founder, Percival Lowell.

At the same time, the people with whom Christy works struggle to prepare for a long winter, with little money and fewer provisions.
Along the way, there are autumnal scenes like a turkey shoot, a children's reenactment of the first thanksgiving and plenty of shots of the Smoky Mountains in the fall.
And Taly Daly turns in a delight- ful performance as one of Christy's co-workers, a tough missionary who I assume is supposed to be a Quaker, since she says things like "We could use thy help if thee would care to join use."

Christy examined a number of Pluto images from the USNO archives, and he noticed the elongations again.
