 James W. Throckmorton: An Inventory of Papers at the Texas State Archives, 1857-1940 (bulk 1857-1897)
Except for some of the newspaper clippings, all papers are from James W. Throckmorton and his wife, Annie, and date from 1857 to 1897.
James W. Throckmorton, born in Tennessee in 1825, moved to Texas in 1841.
In July 1867, Throckmorton was removed from office by General Philip Sheridan as "an impediment to reconstruction." Throckmorton continued in politics and was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, holding that office from 1874 until 1888.

Throckmorton's attempt to organize a state Union party attracted few supporters, and he watched helplessly as the events between 1859 and 1860 precipitated the crisis of 1861.
Throckmorton refused, stating that he had done all he could, given the powers of his office and that his state did not support the Fourteenth Amendment so that he, its governor, could not.

On June 28, a general election was held at which James W. Throckmorton was elected governor.
Some of the officers and many of the men of this force were without character and of unsavory reputation, while a number of the sergeants and privates were Negroes, who when armed and clothed with power were viewed by most Texans as arrogant, domineering and vindictive.
James Davidson, ex-United States officer of volunteers, was the commander of the force and Adjutant General.

His grandfather, Jonathan Allen, was born in Virginia and came from Virginia to Arkansas and from Arkansas to Texas and engaged in the mercantile business and was a member of the legislature of Texas and an early day county judge of Collin County.
His father, during the administration of Governor James W. Throckmorton, with others, guarded the border of its northern frontier against Indian depredations, and acquired a farm near Pilot Point, Texas, and resided there at the time of his death.
Dr. James P. Mathews settled in what is now southwestern Columbia County, Arkansas in 1847 and engaged not only in the practice of medicine and surgery but also in business as a merchant and planter.

Considered by his men to be a hero at the Battle of Monterrey, he was slighted by James Pinckney Henderson in the general's report; the incident may have been decisive in Wood's election as governor in 1847.
In 1870, Pease joined A.J. Hamilton and James Throckmorton in protesting the conduct of the Davis administration; in 1871 he helped lead a taxpayers' revolt; and in 1872 he helped gain amnesty for disenfranchised Democrats.
While campaigning for James Buchanan in the presidential election of 1856, Hubbard's oratorical skill earned him the nickname of "the Demosthenes of Texas." He was appointed U.S. district attorney for the Western District of Texas in 1858, and elected state representative in 1859.

 McKinney Texas History
McKinney’s first postmaster was Joel F. Stewart in 1848, the first merchant was John L. Lovejoy, and the first newspaper in town was the McKinney Messenger, published by James W. Thomas in 1858.
McKinney was also the home of James W. Throckmorton, the 11th governor of Texas, who later served in the United States Congress.
Other frequent visitors to the town were Jesse and Frank James and their James Gang, who came to McKinney to visit their cousin "Tuck" Hill, whose historic house still stands just west of downtown.
