The once home of the renowned Hoosier poet, James Whitcomb Riley is now a shrine operated by Riley Old Home Association open to visitors from throughout the world.
James Whitcomb Riley was born in a log cabin on October 7, 1849 in the little village of Greenfield, in the lap of Indiana's farmland.
Riley's father was a frontier lawyer and politician who named his second son after an Indiana governor, James Whitcomb.

JAMES WHITCOMB was born in Vermont, moved to Kentucky, and graduated from Transylvania University.
Whitcomb was elected governor on the Democratic ticket in 1843, defeating the incumbent governor, Samuel Bigger.
It was during Whitcomb's administration that the Indiana Hospital for the Insane, the Indiana Asylum for the Education of the Deaf and Dumb, and the Indiana Institute for the Education of the Blind were established.

James Whitcomb Riley (Greenfield, Indiana October 7, 1849 – July 22, 1916), American writer and poet called the "Hoosier poet" and America's "Children's Poet" made a start writing newspaper verse in Hoosier dialect for the Indianapolis Journal in 1875.
The James Whitcomb Riley Hospital for Children opened in 1924.

Whitcomb had died in 1852 and Governor Baker had some difficulty securing good pictures for Forbes to copy.
The rather listless eyes and weak mouth are probably due to the poor prototypes Forbes had to follow, and judging by remarks he made in his letters to Conrad Baker, he himself was not entirely satisfied with the result.
The daguerreotype was the property of R. Seymour of Chillicothe, Ohio, a brother-in-law of Governor Whitcomb.

His childhood home in Greenfield, now dubbed James Whitcomb Riley's Old Home and Museum, and his adulthood home on Lockerbie St. in Indianapolis, the James Whitcomb Riley Museum Home, are open to the public.
Born in 1849 in the village of Greenfield, Indiana, which was then nestled in an oak and poplar forest east of Indianapolis, Riley was the son of a lawyer who discouraged young James’ inclination to write poetry as being “too visionary” (Riley 1: 8).

James Whitcomb Riley, a noted Hoosier poet, was born, 7 October 1849, Greenfield, Indiana, the third child of Reuben A. and Elizabeth (Marine) Riley, died, 22 July 1916, Indianapolis, Indiana, and is buried at Crown Hill Cemetery.
