The Chicago Transit Authority (album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Upon the band's 1967 inception, they were initially called "The Big Thing", eventually taking on the moniker The Chicago Transit Authority when producer James William Guercio took them on in 1968.
Fusing brass and jazz with a soulful rock and roll feel was their trademark and Guercio instinctively felt that their sound would prove successful, lobbying for his label to give them a shot.
While Guercio had recently produced Blood Sweat and Tears' second album (which proved to be a huge smash), he did so to raise capital for his band.

James William Guercio was the producer of Chicago albums in the Seventies, and this is his only directorial effort.
It's a "message" film with "message songs" playing in the background, as its ultimate message is that it is better to live in peace and make the world a better place to live in than to blindly obey authority figures.
Because of the excellent photography, via Conrad Hall, of the Monument Valley desert region and the apt depictions of the barren inner landscapes of the individuals trapped by their lies, this film comes through as a powerful story of someone who is done in by the corruption of society.

Chicago III - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the wake of Chicago's enormous worldwide success, Chicago spent almost all of 1970 on the road, an exhaustive undertaking.
When the band came to record Chicago III at the end of the year - which producer James William Guercio had already determined would be another double, they were both physically and creatively drained.
Their long hours on the road gave the principal songwriters, Robert Lamm, Terry Kath and James Pankow, much food for thought, resulting in more serious subject matter, which contrasted with the positivity of their first two sets.

This 1973 film was directed by James W. Guercio, the producer of most of the group Chicago's albums during this period.
James William Guercio produced on a tiny budget and two-week schedule, hand-picked the cast, composed the music and gave up his salary to get legendary cinemaphotographer Conrad Hall to shoot it in the Monument Valley that John Ford used in his westerns, which this film stangely resembles.

 The Buckinghams
By now, their relationship with producer, James William Guercio had pretty much ended while he was off producing Chicago and Blood, Sweat & Tears but the masterful songs survived and made this an album to cherish with songs like "Back in Love Again," "Can I Get a Witness," "Can't Find the Word" and more.
This was a problem for Guercio because he saw it as the group gaining back some control.
In retaliation, Guercio told Clive Davis [head of Columbia] that we were 'puppets,' and if not for him, there would be no Buckinghams.

It should also be noted that James William Guercio only produced the album because Columbia promised him they would sign and release the first album by the Chicago Transit Authority.
Arguably, the BSandT that made this self-titled second album, consisting of five of the eight original members and four newcomers, including singer David Clayton-Thomas, was really a different group from the one that made the debut album, Child is Father to the Man, which was largely under the direction of singer/songwriter/keyboard player/arranger Al Kooper.
BSandT Mark II had certain similarities to the original: the musical mixture of classical, jazz, and rock elements was still apparent, and the interplay between the horns and the keyboards was still ocurring, even if those instruments were being played by different people.

It is perhaps this oversimplification of the process that had become one of the combo's primary points of contention with their longtime producer, musical director, and mentor, James William Guercio.
The shorter arrangements did include several notable and inspired works, such as the Terry Kath (guitar/vocals) opener, "Mississippi Delta Blues." This cut not only demonstrates his agile electric guitar work, the up-tempo and funky track is a showcase for his unparalleled style of arranging.
Frontiere also contributes the less-pronounced "Prelude" to Seraphine's closing ballad, "Little One." Also worth mentioning are James Pankow's soulful "Till the End of Time," which is pulled off with a sonic finesse reminiscent of "Big" Al Anderson during his NRBQ days.

The band featured an unusual and unusually versatile line-up of instrumentalists, including saxophonist Walter Parazaider, trombonist James Pankow, and trumpet player Lee Loughnane, along with more traditional rock instruments -- guitarist Terry Kath, keyboardist Robert Lamm, drummer Danny Seraphine, and bassist Peter Cetera (who was the last to join the original group).
Upon release of their first record in early 1969, the band took a new name, Chicago Transit Authority (the band's name was shortened to simply Chicago soon after the album's release when the "real" Chicago Transit Authority threatened legal action).
That same year, they attempted to merge their unique sound with Big Band music for the album Night and Day Big Band, which consisted of covers of songs originally recorded by Sarah Vaughan, Glenn Miller, and Duke Ellington (from whom the album mainly got its inspiration).
