James Wong Howe - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
James Wong Howe (黃宗霑; pinyin: Huáng Zōngzhān) (August 28, 1899 - July 12, 1976) is considered one of the greatest cinematographers in movie history.
One of those still photographs launched Howe's career as a cinematographer when Howe stumbled across a means of making actress Mary Miles Minter's eyes look darker by photographing her while she was looking at a dark surface (see Howe's technical innovations for more details).
Howe gained a reputation as a perfectionist who could be difficult to work with, often overruling and even berating other members of the film crew.

When reading The 11th Hour's first interview with Glen Morgan and James Wong, one cannot help but notice a recurrent theme.
But, of course, this is a Morgan and Wong story, and while the Foxed-up days of premature cancellation have reached their end, the filmmakers have nonetheless encountered several obstacles along the way.
Morgan and Wong's deference to older genre films is evident in the names of Final Destination's characters, almost all of which were chosen with a classic horror director in mind, including Tod Browning, Robert Wiene, Alfred Hitchcock, and Val Lewton.

James Wong Howe knew how to make stars even sexier
Nevertheless, here we have it: a weeklong tribute to James Wong Howe (1899-1976), one of the greats of lighting, who was born in China, cracked the racial barriers of Hollywood and went on to have a 58-year career that earned him 10 Academy Award nominations and two Oscars.
He had used "James Howe" as his credit name, but at the advent of the sound era, he attracted notice by adding Wong to his official credit.
He also raised eyebrows by marrying a non-Asian woman (the writer Sonora Babb; their union lasted for more than 40 years, until his death), and he was involved tangentially in the McCarthy hearings of the early 1950s, which briefly hurt his career.

The concept of alternate universes has fascinated science fiction writers through the years, forming the basis for a number of fascinating books, television episodes, and motion pictures.
However, because director James Wong (who helmed the equally dumb Final Destination) is disinterested in the paradoxes inherent in this kind of travel, we are presented with a frustratingly banal action movie that uses the science fiction elements as window dressing.
Ironically, the fight sequences suffer because of the weakness of the storyline - had we cared more about the characters and their situations, we would have been more concerned about the outcome of the various martial arts encounters.
