James Woodson Bates (August 25, 1788– December 26, 1846) was an American lawyer and statesman from Sebastian County, Arkansas.
James was born in Goochland County, Virginia at his father's plantation known as 'Belmont.
In 1835 Bates was a delegate to the state convention the drew up the first constitution of the new State of Arkansas.

James, known muster rolls show 1,525 men from the county served in the Confederate Army and 815 in the Union, and there were others who joined units of both sides outside the county.

Jesse Woodson James was born 5 September 1847 on the James farm near Centerville, Clay County, Missouri.
Woodson was a James family name in honor of an old family friend, Silas Woodson of Kentucky, who had moved to Missouri around 1840 and would become Governor in 1874.
When Zerelda James was summoned to view the body the next morning and make positive identification, she is reported to have blurted out, "That’s not my son." She was immediately ushered into an anteroom, and when she returned, she said she had not seen Jesse for awhile.

James Trimble, accompanied by John L. Austin, Henderson S. and Lorenzo Dow Lafferty, came overland from Kentucky driving a herd of stock cattle before them and stopped at the mouth of the Poke Bayou.
James McGarrah claimed that he cut the first tree at Polk Bayou in 1814 to build a house, but there were other, earlier houses built in the area.
Although Bates lived in Batesville only three years, he is remembered as one of the most prominent men in Arkansas at that time.

Born in 1777 in Belmont, Virginia, Bates started his career as a low level government official in Detroit, Michigan, then received a significant promotion when the Aaron Burr conspiracy was uncovered.
In 1824, Bates became the second governor of Missouri, and died in office in August 1825, in Chesterfield, Missouri, due to a short illness thought to be pneumonia.
Bates was buried at the family cemetery on the Thornhill estate near St.

Judge James Woodson Bates, brother of Frederick and Edward Bates, of national notoriety, was born in Goochland County, Va., about 1788, and died at his home in Crawford (now Sebastian) County, Ark., in the year 1846.
After leaving Congress, Bates removed to the newly settled town of Batesville, which was named after him, and there resumed the practice of law.

Although Arkansas was made into a territory by Congress on March 4, 1819, it did not begin its actual working territorial existence until July 4, when the appointments of James Miller as the first governor and Robert Crittenden as the first secretary had been made.
As of July 28, Governor Miller had still not made it to the post, but the first territorial legislature was held any way at Arkansas Post with Crittenden acting as governor (United States).
On November 1, the first term of the Circuit Court convened and the post where James Woodson Bates presided.

Following the admission of the State of Louisiana in 1812, Arkansas remained a district of the newly named Territory of Missouri, and the Superior Court retained its jurisdiction.
On 2 March 1819, President James Monroe approved a congressional act that established a separate Territory of Arkansas and, two days later, appointed three judges to the Arkansas Superior Court.
The first sessions were held at Arkansas Post in November 1819 and January 1820.
