Woodward is well known among Southern merchants, with whom for many years he had been brought in frequent contact, and some of his most substantial friends are among that class of people.

James Woodward - Making Things Happen: a Theory of Causal Explanation - Reviewed by Henk W. de Regt, Vrije Universiteit ...   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-24)
Woodward regards this as an advantage, as it allows for an objective theory of causation; it is here that he departs from existing agency theories of causation, that are explicitly anthropomorphic.
Woodward argues that this circularity is not vicious because the causal information required to characterize the intervention is independent of the alleged causal relation between X and Y (p.104).
Woodward convincingly demolishes this strategy, which assumes that there is, or should be, a full-blown DN account referring to laws of nature underlying the ink bottle story.

 Alternate View Column AV-83
Woodward's theory can be tested because it predicts a remarkable effect: if the mass-energy density of a system is made to change with time, the mass of the system should vary by an amount that is proportional to the second time derivative of the density change.
Woodward's published measurements, which appear to have been done with considerable care, record a mass reduction of several milligrams as measured using signal averaging techniques to a statistical accuracy of 10 to 15 standard deviations.
However, Woodward, in formulating his version of Mach's Principle, assumes that the interaction of the isolated object with the other masses of the universe is nonlocal, in analogy with the nonlocal character of quantum mechanics as demonstrated by the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen experiments.

The fall of Bob Woodward - The Boston Globe
Not that you were under any illusion about the turn Woodward's career took when he became a justifying megaphone for ''Washington insiders." Nor is it a surprise to find the dean of investigative journalism acting like every other self-protecting member of the establishment, since journalism itself has become a pillar of the governing power structure.
The free press is an absolute value not only because the unfettered flow of information is essential to the republican system, nor only because the fourth estate serves as a check on the power of the other three, but because public expression is necessary for the communal self-awareness that keeps the body politic alive.
Woodward turns out to have been just another embedded reporter, doing the war-work of the Bush administration while pretending to be independent of it.
