Dennis was born in Coalisland, Co. Tyrone in Northern Ireland and started playing snooker when he was nine and was the local senior champion at 14.
In one of those finals, the 1981 Jameson International, he was embarrassed to be whitewashed 9-0 by Steve Davis.
Success was to come in his 13th season as a professional, 1984/5 and strangely, it was the sudden death of his mother which was to be his inspiration.

Snooker world rankings - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The snooker world rankings are a system of ranking professional snooker players.
Unlike dynamic ranking systems such as the World golf rankings, the snooker rankings remain constant throughout the season (from the end of one world championship to the end of the next).
Over the next few years, results from the Jameson International, the Professional Players tournament (later known as the LG Cup, now the Grand Prix), the Lada Classic, the UK Championship and the British Open were added to the ranking formula.

Sponsorship will be found for snooker tournaments in future on the basis that through whatever political infighting, snooker remains a reasonably hefty TV draw.
Dave B, UK The financial problems are obvious but we don't want snooker going the same way as darts, where splits and rows have ruined the spectacle and prestige as big-name players break away never to return.
Snooker is going the way of other sports such as darts, not enough characters and too many non-playing fingers in to many pies, trying to make a quick buck whilst a sport is popular.

In 1982 he defeated David Taylor in the Jameson International final; in 1983 Johnson was the victim in the Professional Players Tournament; and 12 months later Knowles went to Australia and won the Winfield Masters.
There were plenty of finals and semi-finals: 1984 Jameson (runner-up to Steve Davis), 1985 English Championship (runner-up to Steve Davis), 1985 Rothmans Grand Prix (lost in semis to Dennis Taylor), 1987 British Open (lost in semis to Neal Foulds) and 1988 Mercantile Credit Classic (lost in semis to John Parrott).
There needs to be a natural progression from club snooker, to town snooker, county snooker and then international snooker.

By contrast, in postmodernist art this "aesthetic of expression" seems to have "vanished away" and we are faced with "a new kind of flatness or depthlessness, a new kind of superficiality in the most literal sense" (Jameson 9).
In Postmodernism, Fredric Jameson argues that the distinguishing feature of postmodernist narrative is the impulse towards pastiche, rather than the satirical, parodic mode of modernism (17).
