Jamestown, Virginia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Although Jamestown was an important centre of government and commerce in the 17th century, the capital relocation to Williamsburg in 1699 sent Jamestown into a gradual loss of prominence, reverting it to a few large farms.
The colonists chose Jamestown Island for their settlement largely because the Virginia Company advised them to select a location that could be easily defended from ocean-going navies of the other European states that were also establishing New World colonies and were periodically at war with England, notably the Dutch Republic, France and especially Spain.
Jamestown Festival Park was established at Jamestown Island in 1957 to mark the 350th anniversary of the founding of the Jamestown Settlement.

Jamestown is a town in Newport County, Rhode Island, in the United States.
Most of the town's land is comprised of Conanicut Island, but it also includes a number of small uninhabited islands, the largest of which are Dutch Island to the west, and Gould Island to the east.
There are several active farms on the island, old neighborhoods are intact and historic properties in and near the island - such as windmills and the remains of old military fortifications - remain in place; serving as constant reminders of the history of the island, the Bay and this country.

A Brief History of Jamestown, Virginia
The rest of the ships had limped into Jamestown in August of 1609, their passengers mostly sick or hurt--one ship was said to carry the plague--and provided nothing but extra mouths to feed--400, in fact.
The story of the gale and the survival of the ships' passengers on a tropical island much caught the fancy of Londoners; it is thought that Shakespeare based his last play, "The Tempest" (1613) on this very event.
Raleigh must have followed the Jamestown developments avidly from his cell, and even wrote a letter to Queen Anne in 1610, begging to be allowed to lend his services in person to the colony.
