Rime movement - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Rimé movement (Wylie: Ris-Med) is a Buddhist school of thought founded in Eastern Tibet during the late 19th century largely by Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo and Jamgon Kongtrul Lodro Thaye, the latter of whom is often respected as the founder proper.
Other modern adherents include the late 16th Karmapa and Dudjom Rinpoche, both of whom gave extensive teachings from the works of Jamgon Kongtrul Lodro, as well as the late Akong Rinpoche who, with Chogyam Trungpa helped establish Tibetan Buddhism in Britain.
Thaye was from the Nyingma and Kagyu traditions, while Wangpo had been raised within the Sakya order.

In the early 19th century the well known scholar Jamgon Kongtrul Lodro Thaye voluntarily searched throughout Tibet for the Marpa Lineage Tantras and collected them from Lamas everywhere.
Since Kongtrul could no longer spread the Marpa Tantras among the Kagyus, he requested a great lama of the Sakya school, Jamyang Loter Wangpo to hold the complete Marpa Tantra transmissions and he predicted that in the future they would be returned to the Kagyupa tradition.

Five Great Treasures of Jamgon Kongtrul Predicted by the Buddha, Jamgon Kongtrul Lodro Thaye was a brilliant master of the Rimé (non-sectarian) movement of Buddhism in Tibet.
Lodro Thaye became learned in the ten ordinary and extraordinary branches of knowledge, and it became his responsibility to explain and compose texts, which incorporated a great number of teachings from both the old and new traditions, including the lineages of oral teachings, hidden treasures (terma), and teachings of pure vision.
Thus, the Tripitaka was adopted as a unity of doctrines and opinions within the religious order, and also an orthodox teaching for the Buddhists to follow.

The Dzogchen Lineage of Nyoshul Khenpo
Thus he was able to preserve and transmit all the lineages in a totally nonsectarian manner, sparking -- along with Jamgon Kongteul and Chogyur Lingpa -- the Rimé renaissance in East Tibet during the last century.
Khenpo Rinpoche said that there are extant biographies of almost all the lineage masters, written either by the masters themselves or close disciples, with the notable exception of three: Orgyan Rabjam Chodrak, Orgyan Rabjam Palgon (Sri Natha, Jigme Lingpa's Nyingthig guru and a disciple of Orgyan Rabjam Chodrak), and Nyoshul Lungtok Tenpai Nyima.
There are said to be five great kingly tertons, one hundred major tertons, and one thousand minor tertons, though one should understand that the actual number of tertons is countless and the number of termas, like the tantras, is inconceivable.

The Tiny Book of Stopping and Looking
Jamgon Kongtrul Lodro Thaye in his “Treasury of Knowledge” says that samatha is like the oil in a lamp, vipasyana is like the flame.
And approaching practice as a gradual cultivation of particular states, acquiring this and getting rid of that, is an approach easily co-opted by self-image.
Thus, first one cultivates samatha and then gives rise to vipasyana Another take on this metaphor which cuts through the gradualist approach implicit in this, was told to me by Anzan sensei.

 jesze blog - archiwum
The Great Jamgon Kongtrul Lodro Thaye, in several of his writings, berates practitioners who believe they can immerse themselves in the "worldly dharmas," and at the same time practice the essential points of the path.
And yet no less an authority than the Mahasiddha Tilopa reminded his disciple Naropa that it is not the appearances of the world that enslave him, but rather his craving for them.
We may regard these as endorsements of the monastic and mahasiddha paths, respectively.
