The cultured Canadian response to military deaths such as that of Corporal Jamie Murphy in Afghanistan seems to be one of understandable regret coupled with an unfortunate spasm of contempt for the militarism that requires us to fight for important matters.
When the oglers of grief at CBC were able to get their predictable cry of anguish from the fallen soldier’s family, they withdrew, content then to play the sought after soundbite denouncing the powers-that-be for sending this Newfoundlander to his death on foreign soil.
Murphy's death might later be shown to be in vain if, as now seems possible, Afghanistan descends into a narco-state”….

In all fairness though, in peacetime the death of a soldier is hardly mentioned.
when those freedoms are interfered with and infringed upon we rely on our soldiers individually to make the difference in the lives of strangers, those like you and me. it might seem as call of duty, and yes now the world is full of heroism.

In most armies of the world a soldier who is not an officer can in theory work their way through the ranks to obtain a commission.
A soldier who no longer serves in the armed forces is often called a veteran, a term which can also apply to a long-serving or experienced soldier who is still in the army.
The word soldier is derived from an Old French word, itself a derivation of Solidarius, Latin for someone who served for pay, as opposed to warriors in tribal society where every grown man is automatically a member of his clan's fighting force.

As the body of Canadian soldier Cpl. Jamie Murphy arrived at CFB Trenton last week, some are saying one thing was amiss: the flags were not at half staff.
Donald Martin was on the base in the fall of 2003 when the bodies of two soldiers killed in Afghanistan were brought into Trenton.
Murphy was stationed at CFB Petawawa, where the flags were at half-mast from the time of his death until after his funeral.

One of the main tasks of the next rotation of soldiers moving into Kabul, Roto 4, will be tearing down Camp Julien and moving most of its equipment south.
Afterward, they'll go through the logistically complicated process of closing Camp Julien, ensuring that the soldiers are placed elsewhere and the equipment is gone by Dec. 1.
Then, it will be up to this new group of soldiers to ensure a base is established in Kandahar for the larger wave of troops heading to the region.
