		Jamie Selkirk, editor of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, told SCI FI Wire that the final three-hour, 20-minute movie was trimmed down from an earlier cut that ran more than four and a half hours.
		"It was really difficult, because we had a lot of very key stuff to actually still get in within the story," Selkirk said in an interview.
		After the film's climax, there is still a 20-minute denouement, which Selkirk thought was a first for Hollywood movies.

		The art of editing and advances in edit systems were the topics foremost on the minds of the Oscar-nominated editors participating in the fourth annual Invisible Art/Visible Artists seminar organized by American Cinema Editors.
		Selkirk said waiting for finished shots of the digital spider Shelob until the very end of production made it extraordinarily difficult to cut the scene for acting since his footage merely showed the actors rolling around on bluescreen pretending to interact with the gargantuan spider.
		Selkirk noted that it was very hard to rework and fine-tune the Shelob sequence, which ultimately required reshoots.
