  Munir Bashir - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Munir Bashir was born in Mosul in northern Iraq into a musical family of Assyrian extraction.
According to Bernhard Lewis (1950) he has freed himself, "of the irritant of foreign interference" and "met the West on terms of equal co-operation." Munir Bashir died in 1997.
His brother, Jamil Bashir was also a great Oud-player.

Jamil Othman Ghanim was born in Aden, Yemen in 1941 into a cultured family.
After five years Jamil Ghanim was able to play the ‘Caprice’ of Sherif Muheiddin, the most difficult piece for the oud, and he ranked amongst the ten best oud players in the Middle East.
And so it was Europe that discovered Munir Bashir in 1971 and Jamil Bashir in 1974.

The Bashir children were compelled to live up to that honor and responsibility, and both became apprentices of master instructor Sharif Mohiedin Haydar.
Jamil excelled beyond his father's expectations, later developing his own style on the oud, and also played the violin.
In fact, Bashir was "discovered" in Beirut by Swiss ethnomusicologist Simon Jargy, who invited him to perform in Geneva, thus moving him to the international arena, in which he found recognition and comfort.

Bashir, from the northern Gaza town of Beit Hanoun, was sentenced by an Israeli army court to four years' imprisonment for being a member of the armed offshoot of the Fatah movement and possession of arms.
When asked what he would do first after the release, Bashir said he was going to visit the grave of his brother Hassan al-Bahri, who was killed last February when Israeli troops launched an all-out offensive in Beit Hanoun that lasted for several weeks.
Bashir's house was also razed during the aggression.

KABUL (AP) Four Afghan doctors, their faces hidden behind surgical masks, amputated the right hand and left foot of a convicted thief Friday before a crowd of about 2,000 people.
The thief, Bashir Ahmed, was a soldier in the Taliban religious army when he robbed three people of $500 near the front line in northeastern Afghanistan, said an unidentified religious scholar who oversaw the amputation.
Jamil said he preferred to play soccer, having heard on the radio about the World Cup championship being played in France.

(In a recent innovation by Munir Bashir, of Iraq, the 11th, low string is not on the traditional bridge but on the lower edge of the soundbox.
The raqma ('membrane'), a piece of fish-skin or leather, or occasionally of shell, between the bridge and the soundhole, protects the belly from the strokes of the plectrum.
Munir Bashir (Iraq) extended the technique by using the right hand too; he has made it one of the canons of present-day aesthetics of the 'ud.

CAIRO - Oud player Omar Bashir stirred his audience here Wednesday with a tribute to the music played by his late father Munir Bashir, the Iraqi master of the art, as well as with his own Western-Arab style.
The younger Bashir, 30, was warmly applauded at the Cairo Opera House when he played tunes of his own, his Iraqi father, who died in 1997, and his uncle Jamil, who died in 1977, during a music festival which ended Wednesday.
Omar, who lives in Hungary where his mother is from, said he "was trying to take maximum advantage of the contribution of Western music, while preserving the authenticity of Arab music."

RAWALPINDI, Aug 5: The Lahore High Court, Rawalpindi bench, on Thursday reserved judgment on the petition of a candidate in the Attock by-polls, seeking a different election symbol.
Justice Tanveer Bashir Ansari reserved judgment on a petition filed by Eng Jamil Ahmed Malik, a candidate of the Communist Party of Pakistan.
The petitioner through his counsel, Irfan Haider, contended that he had been allotted "lock" as election symbol despite the fact that his party symbol was "hammer".
