Culture jamming - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Culture jamming is a resistance movement to the perceived hegemony of popular culture, based on the ideas of "guerrilla communication".
Culture jamming's intent differs from that of artistic appropriation (which is done for art's sake) and vandalism (where destruction or defacement is the primary goal), although its results are not always so easily distinguishable.
The phrase "culture jamming" comes from the idea of radio jamming: that public frequencies can be pirated and subverted for independent communication, or to disrupt dominant frequencies.

Jamming with other people is one of the parts of making music where you can really learn what this art form is about and get a lot of satisfaction and pleasure as well as become a lot more skilled at it.
In more advanced jams, often the "classic" arrangement of a particular number is followed, including choice of key, which instrument solos when, harm ony parts, etc. However, if the classic version is in a key that doesn't work well for the lead singer, the singer calls the key and the others adapt.

GPS is particularly vulnerable to jamming, because the receivers are exquisitely sensitive -- they have to be, to receive the extremely weak signal from orbiting satellites.
Jamming is one of several conditions that can cause a RAIM flag to be raised.
Incidentally, jamming is by no means the only event that can make a GPS receiver deliver incorrect data -- signals from the GPS satellites can be corrupted, too few satellites can be visible from certain positions to deliver an accurate position, and receivers can malfunction (which has happened to me, personally).

"Culture jamming," a term I have popularized by articles in The New York Times and Adbusters, might best be defined as media hacking, information warfare, terror-art, and guerrilla semiotics, all in one.
Billboard bandits, pirate TV and radio broadcasters, media hoaxers, and other vernacular media wrenchers who intrude on the intruders, investing ads, newscasts, and other media artifacts with subversive meanings are all culture jammers.

The word, "culture jamming" comes from the idea of radio jamming: that public frequencies can be pirated and subverted for independent communication, or to disrupt dominant frequencies.
The Situationist International first made the comparison to radio jamming in 1968, when it proposed the use of guerrilla communication within mass media to disseminate confusion within hegemonic cultural discourse.
Forms of culture jamming include adbusting, performance art, graffiti art and hacktivism (notably cyber squatting).

Their Helter Stupid EP (1989), for example, chronicles a hoax of theirs that landed them on evening news in connection with a murder.
But Negativland never really did much with "culture jamming." Though there's never been a shortage of catchy slogans associated with the band and their work ("Copyright infringement is your best entertainment value," "Christianity is stupid," "Negativland is stupid"), nametags were more of an afterthought.
