The Dalai Lama is often thought to be the head of the Gelug, but this position is held by the Ganden Tripa (Holder of the Throne of Ganden, the first monastery established by Lama Je Tsong Khapa, founder of the Gelug).
The Dalai Lamas are believed to be manifestations of Avalokiteshvara, the Bodhisattva of Compassion, whose name is Chenrezig in Tibetan, though Tenzin Gyatso denies claims of his Buddhahood.
Until the 14th Dalai Lama's exile in 1959, the Dalai Lamas resided in Lhasa in the Potala Palace during winter and in the Norbulingka residence during summer.

In May 2001, the People's Daily, a state-run Chinese newspaper, alleged that Choeden Gyatso had planned to commit self-immolation in front of the Chinese embassy in New Delhi after reading out a list of demands that included the release of Gedun Choekyi Nyima, the Panchen Lama recognised by the Dalai Lama.
According to the response, Dawa Gyatso (Chin: Dawa Jiangcuo) was sentenced in 1997 to 18 years imprisonment for "organising or leading a counterrevolutionary group" and "counterrevolutionary propaganda and incitement." His sentence was reduced by one year and three months in 2002 and by nine months in 2004.

Tashi Tsering has received initiations, instructions, teachings and blessings from His Holiness the Dalai Lama, His Holiness the late 16th Gyalwa Karmapa (1924-1981), His Holiness the late Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche (1910-1991), the 4th Do Drubchen Rinpoche, the 4th Garje Khamtrul Rinpoche, Khunu Geshe Rigzin Tempa (1893 -1981) and many other highly realised lamas and teachers.
This centuries old tradition of wandering religious story-tellers had been discontinued in exile but Tashi Tsering managed to identify such practitioners in various Tibetan settlement and encouraged their revival by bringing a number of them to Dharamshala, recording their recitations and arranging an audience for them with His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
1983: in a talk to Tibetan Youths in Delhi in His Holiness the Dalai Lama cited Tashi Tsering as the only representative of the younger generation with strong interest and erudition in Tibetan culture and history.

Norbu Lingkha, the summer palace of the successive Dalai Lamas since the time of the 7th Dali Lama kelsang Gyatso.
The particular palace "kelsang Podrang" was built in 18th century by the 8th Jamphel Gyatso and used by most every successive Dalai Lamas up until the 13th, Gyal wa Thubten Gyantso.
The name itself has a very auspicious meaning, and I imagine there would be enormous relics and other belongings left behind by the successive Dalai Lamas throughout the time.
