Topic: Jan Bucquoy

  Camping Cosmos
On the Belgian coast in the summer of '86, Jan Bucquoy and a bevy of former 1968 intellectuals try to bring the working class nearer to art and culture (or vice versa).
In the sand dunes where Camping Cosmos is set, one follows the merry escapades of campers, football fans, "dandy poets", unsatisfied women, frustrated performers and a whole little world struggling happily with the tragedies of daily life in the immensity of the Cosmos.
Jan Bucquoy studied Literature at Grenoble, Philoshophy at Ghent, Filmmaking at Brussels (INSAS) and political science at Strasburg.

 King of Fools « NDNL
Jan Bucquoy is a silly little man with a dirty mind.
But first and foremost he is one of those crazy Belgians who are more messed up than the country they live in, shout out the loudest and get noticed the least.
Of course Bucquoy and his small band of followers didn’t stand a chance and were swiftly removed by the police, administratively detained (meaning their names were taken down for further reference) and released, in all likelihood to regroup in some dark, little local pub where they may have discussed next year’s plan of attack.

We follow Bucquoy (Compère) from a pitiable adolescent relationship with his mother through his first marriage and on to many in-between lovers -- prompting the all-inclusive title.
Though reasonably unified, the entirely autobiographical film (part one of a planned series), is best viewed as a grouping of vignettes that inform the other sketches but still stand comfortably on their own.
Much of the film's action centers around the figure of director Bucquoy's austere mother (Legros), whose reigning principle is, "Life is so expensive." Bucquoy draws telling parallels between his mother and first wife, both of whom have a marked penchant for slapping Bucquoy at the drop of a pin.

The first segments begin in the repressive '50s when Jan grew up with a penurious, emotionally distant mother and a self-absorbed father.
During the tumultuous '60s, Jan goes to Brussels to launch a brilliant writing career.
Awed by the city's seemingly endless sophistication with its political activists and sexual freedom, the naïve Jan feels at last he has found his proper venue.

The Sexual Life of the Belgians 1950–1978 (La Vie Sexuelle des Belges 1950–1978) Film Review - Time Out Film
Belgian writer/director Jan Bucquoy can hardly be accused of vanity in his choice for the central role in this autobiographical portrait of the artist as a young slob.
From awkward, greasy small-town boy to awkward, greasy big-city near-man: such is the making of this would-be revolutionary, aspirant novelist and ever-hopeful lover, the anti-Gump with whom we spend the rest of the picture.
Episodic and conversational, this is no lurid exposé of salacious goings-on in the realm of beer and mussels; instead, it's a shambling, rather disarming survey of the amorous mishaps and potentially numbing provincialism that make post-'68 model Jan ready to change the world, and downright desperate to get his leg over in the interim.

Howard Zinn: You Can't be Neutral on a Moving Train
From one sexual misadventure to another, Jan Bucquoy's autobiographical comedy is a deadpan, funny account of a young man's sexual awakening.
Like an early Woody Allen, Bucquoy stumbles through the furtive groping of his teen years into the free-love decade of the Sixties, all the while providing a hilariously subversive blend of pointed satire and sharp humor.

I'm writing this little pensée in defence of Hergé (the creator of Tintin) because he has been receiving a touch of bad press recently* thanks to the interest in Jan Bucquoy's film 'The Sexual Life Of The Belgians'.
It is this that has prompted me to defend Hergé, as there are many who presume just because the artist stayed in Brussels and continued to work there while the city was under Nazi control, he was a collaborator.
