PoetryReviews.ca » Jaguar Rain: The Margaret Mee Poems by Jan Conn
Conn gives the reader no preamble; the leap into the Brazilian landscape is immediate and alienating, much as Mee found her initial forays into the forest to be.
Conn, through Mee, hints that there is a fine dividing line that holds one back from acknowledging the mysterious nature of a place populated by reclusive tribespeople, exotic plant life, and dangerous, vibrant animals.
Conn leaves the reader with the sense that this is a survival tactic: in the face of a vast wilderness where death is an ever-present threat, to dwell on mortality is to attempt to remove oneself from reality.

Review - Beauties on Mad River by Jan Conn
Conn has arranged the poems in this collection to portray the evolution of certain recurring themes in her work.
‘Namesake’, whose underlying subject is the suicide of Conn’s mother, uses desert images, with light resonating throughout the section in various forms, such as moonlight, a white silk blouse, light waves and the yellow of daffodils.
Conn’s poetry tends to take a hard objective viewpoint; perhaps her work as a biologist makes her see life clinically and portray it without easy emotional engagement.

We were scared to death,” says Jan Conn about this issue’s “Classic Climb,” Conn Diagonal, which she and her husband, Herb, put up on August 26, 1953.
Of the roughly 220 first ascents the Conns made in the Black Hills, many climbers regard the iconic route as one of the boldest, helping to spawn a strict ground-up, all-free, hand-drill-only ethic that has come to define the area.
The first pitch of the Conn follows a diagonalling flake system requiring stemming and laybacks, with larger gear placements (bring cams up to 4”) and a mid-height piton, to a bolted anchor.
