Jan Davidszoon de Heem groeide op in Utrecht en was daar in de leer bij bloemstillevenschilder Balthasar van der Ast.
Hoewel De Heem vooral in Antwerpen woonde, verbleef hij toch nog regelmatig een periode in het noorden: in 1649 en tussen 1665 en 1672 was hij in Utrecht.
De Heem is one of the rare Dutch artists who captured some of the exuberance of Flemish Baroque painting, and soon after he settled in Antwerp in the 1630s his coloristic splendor rivals that of the native Flemings.
