Classical Net Review - The Remarkable Jan DeGaetani
Jan DeGaetani (1933-90) was a mezzo-soprano with a unique voice, range of repertoire, and persona.
And finally, she captures the varied idioms of the Shostakovich, Welcher, and Kurtag songs (sung in Russian, English, and Hungarian) not only with precision but with a depth of understanding and sympathy that is breath-taking.
DeGaetani is much missed, but fortunately, she left us a substantial recorded legacy, most of it originally released by Arabesque and now reissued by Bridge.

DeGaetani was a musician's musician and in this farewell recording she proved that despite the ravages of leukemia she still had significant things to say, both intellectualy and, most assuredly, compassionately.
DeGaetani's final album, recorded while she was suffering from the final stages of leukemia but fortunately with sufficient temporary remission from the illness that it hardly affected her vocal prowess.
DeGaetani was one of the treasures among American musicians of her era.

Jan DeGaetani - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Educated at The Juilliard School, DeGaetani was best known for her wide range, precise pitch, clear tone, and command of extended techniques that made her voice perfectly suited to the demanding style of modern and avant-garde vocal composition.
Uncommonly for a singer of her caliber (though her voice was not as powerful as most), DeGaetani rarely appeared in opera, instead concentrating on solo recital work in the art song literature.

But Schoenberg would have had few complaints about Jan DeGaetani, the mezzo-soprano whose recording of his Book of the Hanging Gardens was just released on Nonesuch.
DeGaetani has made a big reputation singing contemporary works partly because of her uncanny ability to navigate faultlessly among unconventional rhythms and unexpected pitch relations.
DeGaetani's tone in her low register has an eerie, mysterious quality which reflects the ambiguous and sinister tests by Stefan George.

Although a specialist in new music, DeGaetani was also at home performing medieval music, baroque cantatas, and lieder from from the 19th century.
DeGaetani initially studied at the Juilliard School of Music in New York City, and from 1973 taught at both the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York and the Aspen Festival in Colorado.

MUSIC: JAN DEGAETANI IN CARNEGIE DEBUT - New York Times
She had, however, done virtually everything else one would expect of a widely admired singer with an attractive voice, superlative musicianship, linguistic mastery, an interest in offbeat repertory and a particular gift for interpreting problematic contemporary vocal music.
In fact, though the mezzo-soprano sang nicely throughout the evening, she seldom projected the texts and moods of her songs with sufficient intensity to galvanize the audience's attention.
It is possible that Miss DeGaetani could have made this eccentric program arresting in a small hall, since she did everything right on this occasion except project adequately.

CONCERT: JAN DEGAETANI, MUSIC OF 20TH CENTURY - New York Times
Miss DeGaetani lent her wonderful ear and musicianship to all this music.
Like most people whose business it is to project beauty, she knew how to center our attention on her attractions - especially the rich middle range of her voice - and keep our minds off the shortcomings - namely, the fraying and thinning of her sound when it reached upward.
She also understood perfectly when to blend with her six colleagues on stage (all from the Eastman School, where Miss DeGaetani teaches) and when to let the voice dominate.

DeGaetani's ability to navigate this tricky terrain in a way that lets the music come through without distracting us with "wow that sounds HARD" is one of the best things about it.
And she doesn't get too "classical" with this most varied repertoire- a thing that easily spoils it.
I think this music is extremely accessible for even non-fans of Ives, and I highly recommend this recording for its thoughtfulness and elan.

During her tenure at the conservatory, she performed roles in many operas, oratorios and chamber works including Isabella in Rossini’s Italian Girl in Algiers, and Donna Elvira in Mozart’s Don Giovanni, Nancy in Britten’s Albert Herring, Galatea in Handel's Acis and Galatea, as well as soloist in Duruflé’s Requiem, with the Rochester Philharmonic.
Miller performed frequently with Eastman's Musica Nova Ensemble, including in a special performance of Ancient Voices of Children by George Crumb (a work originally composed for Jan DeGaetani, and premiered at the Library of Congress).

The audience cheered, and the critics raved about Upshaw's charm and freshness; she seemed set for a predictable rise in the soubrette roles of grand opera.
A few years earlier, one of her voice teachers, Jan DeGaetani, had told her to "seek your own path." Upshaw took that advice.
From Mozart to Stravinsky to show tunes, she sings a far wider range of music than is typical for an international star, yet at 34 she has risen faster and further than any other American singer of her generation.

Several of Crumb's works, including the four books of madrigals he wrote in the late 1960s and Ancient Voices of Children, a song cycle of 1970 for two singers and small instrumental ensemble (which includes a toy piano), are settings of texts by Federico García Lorca.
Many of his vocal works were written for the virtuoso singer Jan DeGaetani.
Black Angels (1970) is another piece which displays Crumb's interest in exploring a wide range of timbres.
