  Jan Dismas Zelenka - Wikipedia

Zelenka followed the general rules for marking accidentals used by 18th-century composers: an accidental affects only the note to which it is prefixed (except in the case of repeated notes and octaves); a sharp is contradicted by a flat sign (except in the case of B and E where a natural is used).
Zelenka was of the habit of writing two bars between the pre-ruled barlines of the score to save space in movements where there were few notes per bar.

This recording presents four representative sacred works by Jan Dismas Zelenka from the period of about 1727 to 1733 which Friedrich Rochlitz(a Leipzig Musicologist)held in high exteem for the 'admirable idiosyncrasy' of the harmonic language and 'ornately entwined' voices.
The instrumental elements are mixed with passages of extended semi-recitative for the alto soloist and interpolations from the chorus.
It is unlikely that Zelenka will have a popular piece that endears him to the public at large--Bach has his keyboard music and tocatta and fugue in D minor, Handel has his Fireworks and Water Music, and Vivaldi has his Four Seasons.

 Zelenka
Most musicologists dealing with music of this period agree that the compositions of this long-forgotten musical giant approach or equal those of his contemporaries Bach, Händel, Vivaldi and Telemann in their advanced use of counterpoint, their extreme demands on the players and singers, their ingenuity and resourcefulness, and their overall beauty.
Zelenka wrote instrumental music (including orchestral suites and chamber sonatas), a great amount of church music of various kinds, and also religious music for the "stage".
During Zelenka's final years, much of his music was inspired by Italian opera, which became fashionable in Dresden about fifteen years before he died.

Zelenka, born in Bohemia and Jesuit-educated, was in an admirable position to take charge of the Catholic church's musical requirement in Dresden, for which he would eventually provide some 150 sacred compositions.
