Dabrowski’s Legion was active in West Prussia and at the siege of Gdansk (Danzig), and later in East Prussia where it saw action at Friedland (1807).

It was created between 16 and 19 of July, 1795 in Reggio di Emilia in Italy, on the occasion of the departure of the Polish legions, led by general Jan Henryk D±browski (1755-1818) to fight in the Napoleonic wars (supporting the French dictator).
It is because of this connection that the current national anthem of Poland still contains a reference to Bonaparte and speaks of marching from Italy to Poland, under the leadership of general Jan Dabrowski.
Dabrowski's Mazurka was officially recognized as the national anthem in Poland in 1926.

 Short History of Poland
From 1609 Poland became involved in a series of wars and was invaded by Swedes, Turks and Muscovites in such numbers that the country was almost submerged by enemy forces; this period became known as the "Deluge".
One historic episode during the "Deluge" was the defence of Czestochowa, Poland's most sacred shrine containing the picture of the Virgin Mary (the "Black Madonna"), by a small force led by the Prior and his monks against a besieging army of 9,000 Swedes.
In 1673, Hetman Jan Sobieski scored a splendid victory over the Turks at Chocim which, though not changing the provisions of the treaty, enabled Sobieski's election to the throne.

CULTURE AND SCIENCE - Polish Culture in Croatia
The documents that were sent by Dabrowski to Napoleon Bonaparte in 1797 inform us that the Polish general proposed to the leader of the French army in Italy a joint army operation in which the Polish legion would go into the Austrian territory.
In this fragment Wybicki presumably suggested that general Dabrowski was supposed to use a similar maneuver to hetman Czarniecki's in the 17th century, that is traverse the sea, only this time the Adriatic.
Despite many difficulties and set-backs the plans to traverse the Adriatic by the Polish legions were revived in 1798, when a French agent, Duke Frano Dolci de Viskovic from Dubrovnik presented to Dabrowski a plan of using the Polish legions for an armed operation on the territory of the Dubrovnik Republic.
