Kolski himself encourages this description by film critics, for example, he admitted on several occasions that Gabriel Garcia Marquez's Hundred Years of Solitude was one of his favourite books and expressed a desire to make a film based on it (Wojcik, 1994: 10).
The "unnatural" or "mysterious" in Kolski's films has two principal meanings; the first refers to miraclulous events, people retaining god-like power, such as the ability, which Jancio Wodnik possesses, to influence the flow of water, or to attract metals with ones body, which is the case of the title character in Magneto.
Accordingly, Kolski's narratives are full of situations and images of failed seriousness on the part of their characters, of peasants' ambitions which do not match their possibilities.

Jan Jakub Kolski’s great grandmother opened one of the first movie theatres in the city of Lodz in 1907, his grandfather was a film producer and distributor for the big American studios, Kolski’s father and older sister were both editors.
Jan Jakub Kolski remains a creator of his own variety of auteur cinema, and we can only assume that the reasons for his not fully expressing his creative independence in recent years are non-artistic.
Kolski purposely judges their stances in an ambiguous manner on the premise that good and evil co-exist in the world; the director seems to say that not always do they need to be categorically distinguished from each other.

Although the supernatural is often present in the films of Kolski's compatriot, Krzysztof Kieslowski, and Symbolist dream-like sequences are still common in Russian and Yugoslav film, Kolski stands alone in Central European cinema as a director who is concerned more with the spiritual than the material, the social or the political.
Kolski presents his story in terms of the age-old opposition of time as a linear dimension and as a cyclical one, with the director's heart more adamantly leaning toward the latter.
Kolski himself has a personal interest in such connections: his grandfather ran one of the first cinemas in Poland and also produced films.

The work of Jan Jakub Kolski, probably the most stylistically unconventional of contemporary Polish filmmakers, has been compared to the magic realism of South American writers, but his films, despite innumerable awards at home and abroad, are not magic at the boxoffice.
But viewers should know that Gombrowicz himself, stranded in Argentina from the outbreak of the war, warned that his “depiction” should not be taken literally, and Kolski himself, unlike Polanski, did not experience the occupation and, like Gombrowicz, had other concerns as well.
Kolski has added a few elements that offer some clarification of the story’s context, and his characteristically compassionate view has softened Gombrowicz’s satiric edge.

Born in either 1956 or 1957 (sources disagree), Kolski can perhaps be described as a “magical realist”, to use a term generally associated with South American novelists; indeed Gabriel Garcia Marquez is said to be among his favourite writers.
For those of us who regard Polish national cinema as among the most interesting in the world, it is to be hoped that this eclipse is just a temporary phenomenon; perhaps Poland’s imminent entry to the EU will change matters.

Kolski's idiosyncratic blend of pantheistic mysticism and bucolic comedy is here applied to an obscure fable about a peasant blessed with mysterious healing powers who abandons his pregnant wife to tour the countryside.
The fame attendant upon his miracles and the machinations of a charlatan Christ impersonator turn his head - but a curse put on his family by a crazed vagrant brings him, eventually, to his senses.
Certainly Kolski's images are often startlingly eccentric, as are the shifts between 'reality', fantasy and symbolism, but quite what it all means, beyond its warning against the temptations of the flesh, remains a mystery.
