Jan Mayen Island, a part of the Kingdom of Norway, is a 55 km long (southwest-northeast) and 373 km² large arctic volcanic island in the Arctic Ocean, partly covered by glaciers and divided into larger Nord-Jan and smaller Sor-Jan by an isthmus 2.5 km wide.
A dispute between Norway and Denmark regarding the fishing exclusion zone between Jan Mayen and Greenland was settled in 1988 granting Denmark with the greater area of sovereignty.
Jan Mayen is an integrated geographical body of Norway.

Weather reports from Jan Mayen are important for weather forecasting in Norway and the Norwegian Sea and in 1922 the Norwegian Meteorological Institute annexed the island for Norway.
By Royal Decree of 8th May 1929 Jan Mayen was placed under Norwegian sovereignty and by law of 27th February 1930 the island was declared a part of the Kingdom of Norway.
Jan Mayen was chosen as one of the transmitter sites working together with transmitters on the Norwegian mainland, in Germany, on the Faeroes and Iceland.

Jan Mayen is a territory of Norway administered from Oslo through a governor (sysselmann) resident in Longyearbyen (Svalbard); however, authority has been delegated to a station commander of the Norwegian Defense Communication Service.
The island has no indigenous inhabitants, but is assigned the country code (top level domain) SJ and data code JN.

Jan Mayen is listed as sailing in Convoy RU 32 from Reykjavik to the U.K. in July-1942; her destination is given as Hull.
Jan Mayen departed Hafnafjord, Iceland on Jan. 17-1943 and arrived Keflavik that same day (a voyage of about 2 1/2 hours) where she loaded a cargo of about 175 tons fish before starting on her return voyage to Hafnafjord the next morning, Jan. 18.
Not long afterwards, D/S Kongshavn came out from Hafnafjord (en route to Akranes) and in reply to Jan Mayen's signal with the steam whistle she altered course and anchored nearby.

It also made to Jan Mayen on the next C-130 flight--the one that came to pick me up two weeks later.
I would bet that the Americans with more time on Jan Mayen than me are my Academy classmates Loranimal Dick Burke (who followed me in ACTEUR) and Mark Present (civil engineer from Stateside), who oversaw the rebuilding of the tower and re-energizing of the signals during the late fall and winter of that year.
