It was also the birthplace of Jan Adriaanzoon Leeghwater, who was responsible for planning many of the land reclamation projects for which Holland is famous; and it is reputedly the birthplace of another enterprising Dutchman, Jan Janse Weltevree, who spent many years at the court of Korea in the 17th century.
Leeghwater, who was born in De Rijp, was responsible for planning the reclamation of the Beemster and Schermer lakes, and contributed to many other engineering feats both in Holland and abroad.
Jan Janse told the crew of De Sperwer that he had been captured some years previously by the Koreans after the ship he was sailing on anchored off the coast of Korea and he was sent on shore for supplies.

Jan Krudop, who as far as I recall was a member of the same church as my father's mother was, also gave me a note about the relation between the Wijnkoop and Krudop families.
It is remarkable that 'her' weapon shows violins, the reason for that is still unclear to me. As is the information on Jan Krudop's note, because it does not seem to fit in with the information I have on the Wijnkoops from Hoorn.
Jan was born around 1638, when Pieter was at least 21.

As well as looking at the tomb of the famous Rijper Jan Boon and his wife Trijntje Lakeman, it is worth giving some attention to the organ, the fine woodcarving and the little church's ship near the entrance.
There are over 100 fine restored buildings in de Rijp, including a large number of houses, for which reason the old centre of the village has been declared a protected area, where the appearance of the buildings may not be changed.
In the 1950's the church was judged to be irreparably delapidated and it was demolished, leaving only the tombstone floor.

The wintering at Novaya Zemlya, 1596-1597 In the spring of 1596 two ships left the port of Amsterdam on a voyage to discover the Northeastern passage to Cathay (China).
One of the ships was under the command of Jacob van Heemskerck; the captain of the other ship was Jan Cornelisz Rijp.
August 20 the men finally arrived at Kola, where they met Cornelisz Rijp, and November 20, the twelve survivors returned to Amsterdam.

On the outward journey they sighted Bear Island and Svalbard (also known as Spitsbergen), where the ships were separated.
Barents' vessel, captained by Heemskerk, was trapped in the ice after rounding the north of Novaya Zemlya, and the crew was compelled to winter on Novaya Zemlya, tearing apart their ship's superstructure and spare timber to build a lodge.
Since the ship was not released from the ice early in 1597, Barents' party left her in two open boats on June 13, and most of the crew escaped, being picked up by Jan Rijp's ship at Kola Peninsula near Murmansk.
