  Jan Smuts Summary
Jan Smuts the second son of Jacobus Abraham Smuts, a prosperous farmer and a member of the Cape Legislative Assembly, was born on May 24, 1870, on a farm in the Malmesbury district of the Cape Colony (Cape Province).
Smuts sought refuge in the capital of the South African Republic, Pretoria.
Smuts' importance to the Imperial war effort was emphasised by a quite audacious plan, proposed as early as 1940, to appoint Smuts as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, should Churchill die or otherwise become incapacitated during the war.

As the players arrived yesterday at Jan Smuts Airport from Namibia, where they had played two warm-up matches, questions about whether they would be flying to Harare were met with a weary shrug of the shoulders.

Some time ago, in the mid-1990s, Jan Smuts Airport in Johannesburg (South Africa) was renamed to the infinitely more poetic Johannesburg International Airport.
In the spirit of the times, Jan Smuts (being white) was held up as a symbol of apartheid rule.
In fact, Jan Smuts opposed the National Party all his life, had quite a few loopy ideas on the holistic nature of the planet and its inhabitants, and was involved in the founding of the League of Nations (forerunner of the United Nations).

KAL 007 The Questions Remain Unanswered, by Robert W. Lee
The number four engine, with its companion engine on one side and frigid space on the other, would have been enveloped by a slightly colder temperature than the number three (inboard) engine, which was sandwiched between the plane's fuselage and the outboard engine.
Thereafter, the rate is reduced as the pilot signals for assistance, seeks a place to land, makes his position known to potential rescuers, etc. The available data indicates that the captain of KAL 007 followed that procedure.
After "taking off" and climbing to 35,000 feet, the instructor simulated a number four engine fire and failure, accompanied by a rapid cabin decompression of the sort which could be caused by, for example, shrapnel from an explosion penetrating the fuselage.

Although in the minds of many, Johannesburg International Airport is still 'Jan Smuts', at least the former is an accurate and concise description, understood by all.
Renaming an airport is a hugely costly exercise, not only to the airport itself but with wider reaching effects on local communities and authorities, aviation bodies, airlines, service companies and so on.
Changing the airport's IATA code from the current JNB, recognisable by anyone, if this will be done at the same time, further impacts reservations and peripheral systems.
