Topic: Jan Willemszoon Lossy

Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck (April or May, 1562–October 16, 1621) was a Dutch composer, organist, and pedagogue whose work straddled the end of the Renaissance and beginning of the Baroque eras.
Many of his family were musicians—principally organists—and he is known to have studied with Jan Willemszoon Lossy as well as Zarlino, the famous composer and theorist, in Venice.
Sweelinck represents the highest development of the Dutch keyboard school, and indeed represented one of the highest pinnacles attained in keyboard contrapuntal complexity and refinement before J.S. Bach.

Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck was born in Deventer around 1562.
From his early youth until his death he lived in Amsterdam and was never away from there for more than a few days.
There is no Amsterdam musician of distinction traceable before Sweelinck and besides his father, who probably gave him his first lessons, the only teacher who is mentioned is Jan Willemszoon Lossy (1545-1629).

It must be supposed that his son had his early musical training from his father and certainly his general education under the guidance of the Catholic Jacob Buyck, priest of the Oude Kerk (old church) until the changes of 1578.
Later musical studies suggest that he may have been a pupil of Jan Willemszoon, later surnamed Lossy, in Haarlem.
It seems probable that Sweelinck succeeded his father’s position as organist of the Oude Kerk in 1577, since an obituary tribute credits him with 44 years in a position that he certainly held until his death in 1621.

Sleeve Notes - Sweelinck: Organ Music
Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck, the ‘Orpheus of Amsterdam’, was clearly a very clubbable man — his wide circle of friends included poets, scholars and businessmen, as well as other distinguished musicians.
When Jan was only a year or two old they moved to Amsterdam which at that time was no more than a modest fishing village.
It is possible he studied with Jan Willemszoon Lossy, a town musician (but not an organist) in Haarlem.
