 Art Photography - Jan Zach
Zach is one of those figures so original and odd that, if a television movie were made about him, people might dismiss the plot as unbelievable.
Zach's early works included oil paintings and pastels of great richness and expression; one of the most interesting is a youthful self portrait in oil, showing an intense young face below the kind of soft workman's cap in vogue in the 1930s.
Zach and his wife went out and had dinner with Broadfoot at her home, beginning a friendship that would inspire and direct her both personally and professionally.

In Prague Zach was a violinist at St. Gallus and St. Martin and later served as an organist for St. Martin.
One of Zach's masses was performed at the coronation of the Emperor Franz I. He traveled for a brief period in Italy the influence of which appears in his music particularly the instrumental sinfonias and concertos which were set in three movements employing parallel sixths and thirds, Alberti bass, and occasionally heavy ornamentation.
Zach's instrumental sinfonias and concertos were often scored for strings and wind instruments alike in which he set the works with the aforementioned Italian characteristics.

Born in Czechoslovakia, Jan Zach (1914-1986) trained as an artist in Prague, traveled to New York in 1938 to help prepare the Czech pavilion for the New York World's Fair, and never returned home because of the Nazi invasion and later Communist takeover.
In his intersection with Oregon, Zach brought an international perspective on culture, art, and politics that was unusual among artists of the Pacific Northwest.
This book explores Zach's place in European and New World art of the mid-twentieth century, interweaving an account of Zach's colorful life with an assessment of his artwork - from his early paintings and commercial illustrations to his mature work as a major Northwest sculptor.
