Our small contribution to the Nepali jana andolan was to provide information on the movement and its backgrounds to the Nepalis living in Germany, to the press, the political institutions and the general public.
This article was on a conference organized by CNAS and its topic was on ethnic equation after the jana andolan.
The Maoists preferred the jana yuddha, and that means killing people, destroying private or public property and destructing the law and order situation in the country.

The Andolan is not just about leaders and activists as some people with autocratic mindset as constantly and tirelessly talking.
Because of this noble intention of Jana Andolan, I am sure; people will come to the street demanding their rights that they have been unjustly deprived off for some months.
Jana Andolan 2062 could be an excellent opportunity for that.

 NBA PRESS RELEASE: 24 September
Hundreds of men and women belonging to the organisations of tribals and other depressed classes in Thane, Raigarh and Mumbai region expressed their solidarity with the demands of the Narmada Bachao Andolan on Monday (24th September) as the indefinite fast by Medha Patkar and others entered the eighth day.
The Minister, who visited the dharna site along with the Rehabilitation secretary, conceded that there has been procedural delay on part of the state Government on granting land rights to the tribals to the tribals of 73 villages in Akrani tehsil even if the Government basically agreed to confer land rights on the tribals.
Later in the evening a delegation of the Andolan and other organizations continued the dialogue at Mantralaya.

Jana Utthan Pratisthan is completing a decade of its contribution to Dalit movement in Nepal.
An article, “Dalit Andolan- Bichalit Andolan” by Givinda Pariyar, published in “Samaya”, a national weekly of Kathmandu on May 26, 2005 (Jestha 12, 2062 B.S.) has drawn the attention of the concerned organizations and individuals, who flatly refute the allegations of misuse of resources in the course of Dalit movement, as made in the article.
Dalits have been deprived from knowledge, education, awareness, authority and wealth, and are tied up into a chain of age-old slavery due to their oppression based on classes and Varnas for centuries.

Gregson is intrigued about how King Birendra, vilified during the Jana Andolan for vacillating on restoring democracy, has now re-earned the respect of the Nepali people.
It is about the Jana Andolan itself that Gregson has some unconventional views.
He concludes that the scale of the uprising was exaggerated, it was confined to Kathmandu and that the anti-monarchist turn of the demonstrations was not spontaneous but "carefully orchestrated".

India openly supported the jana andolan in 1990, and yet the “revival of democracy” did not produce an automatic renewal of the treaties nor negotiations for fresh ones until the Joint Communiqué was forced upon Nepal in June 1990 to add insult to injury.
What is significant is that it came in the backdrop of India’s economic blockade against Nepal and an India-backed jana andolan to punish a nationalist King Birendra.
It also remains to be seen whether the February 1 royal takeover — indeed a harsh and unpleasant development — leads to the creation of a strong government leadership that not only has the capacity to deliver but enjoys the confidence and trust of the people.

The 1990 Jana Andolan was a popular movement, and many of its leaders were inspired by the movement for independence in India, which was led by Mahatma Gandhi.
We believe the blockade will alienate the people instead of bringing about the urban uprising the Maoists are hoping for.
The longer the hardship, the more popular will be the thinking that the Maoists really don’t care about legitimacy, which was what the 1990 Jana Andolan was all about.

Since the state exercised all-consuming power over their daily lives, Nepalis saw themselves not as citizens but as tenants whose self-interest was to be on the right side of the landlord lest they got punished or thrown out.
In theory, the Jana Andolan of 1990 gave the tenants a stab at becoming citizens to finally press for the ‘share-holder model’ through freely elected political representatives.
There were fragments of hope in, say, the achievements of community forestry, diversity of FM radio news broadcasts and bits of economic reforms.
